I am sorry to hear of Wayne Handy's passing. I am a fan of his music and own every one of his 45 record releases from the 1950s and early 60s. He was a stand-out musician from North Carolina during the early days of rock n' roll but he decided to give it up for the sake of family and to hold down a real job. I spoke with him on the phone and wrote about his music career for a recent reissue of some of his tunes for Bear Family Records in Germany. Though his music career was short, he made a lasting impression and will not be forgotten!

Ed played a very active role in my life. I have many many memories of all the trips we would take to visit him and Ma throughout my childhood. All the long car rides with my family down to North Carolina. There are many stories I could tell about him and the time spent at his home but I think the things I will cherish most about him were the very subtle things that made Ed, Ed. I remember his very calm composure which he always kept. I remember his sense of humor which he would sprinkle in often. I remember him always dressing well and make sure he looked gentlemanly. Ed was a genuine person who provided to those he cared about and upheld a strong sense of honor.

I Will always remember Wayne from the first day at the Greensboro Airport when I visited Meredith in 1995.
I liked him from day 1. He was the incarnation of the cool American man.
Everything was fun with him. From the Happy Hour (the ritual you could not miss), the long hours of discussion, smoking the cigar, hiking the Hanging Rock mountain.
He was the best friend of Louise and Henri He loved them so much and was just like a child with them.
when we were living in Durham, I could not wait spending the weekend with Wayne and Marjorie. He was my second Dad.
I will miss you forever Wayne, but you will always be in my memories.

Ed was the best grandpa I could ask for. I will always remember summers and holidays spent in Greensboro and Reidsville with Ed and Ma. When I think of Ed, I think of Fox News playing in the kitchen, Turkey Hill half 'n half and Munchies, walks with walking sticks, long drives on North Carolina backroads, and grilling out by the driveway. He had a great sense of humor, was very meticulous, and you could always count on Ed to be Ed. I miss you so much and I will never forget you. I hope wherever you are you are with Ma and you are happy. I love you always, Ed!

Ed was the best grandpa I could ask for. I will always remember summers and holidays spent in Greensboro or Reidsville with him and Ma. When I think of Ed I think of driving on North Carolina backroads, Turkey Hill half n half and Munchies, and walks with walking sticks. He was a great guy with a funny sense of humor and an appreciation for consistency. You could always count on him to be good ol Ed. I love you always and I hope wherever you are that you´re happy and with Ma <3

I will never forget the rush of excitement that filled me every time he would pick us up from the airport. He never failed to have a huge smile on his face and his arms wide open waiting for a warm hug.
