Wayne Sharpe Obituary

Sharpe, Wayne Erwin

September 26, 1957 - March 30, 2023

Wayne Erwin Sharpe of Greensboro passed away unexpectedly at age 65 on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Wayne was born September 26, 1957, to Carol Foust Sharpe and Ross J. Sharpe. Wayne is survived by his brother, Wesley Sharpe (wife Leslie) of Greensboro; Aunt Fuschia Foust Adams of Wilmington; Uncle James W. 'Bill' and Aunt Lois Sharpe of Greensboro. He is also survived by cousins Connie Nelson of Wilmington; Mike Nelson (Elaine) of Matthews; Sheila Hurlbert (Roger) of Georgia; Brian Sharpe (Sandy) of Randleman; Stephen Sharpe of Greensboro; Gary Sharpe (Holly) of Greensboro; Larry W. Scruggs, Jr. (Patti) of Florida; and many second cousins and extended family members. Wayne is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Carol Foust Sharpe, father Ross J. Sharpe, Aunt Faye Foust Scruggs, and Uncle Larry W. Scruggs, Sr.

Growing up, Wayne helped on the family farm and attended Southeast Guilford High School. After graduation, he earned an associate degree in technical illustration from Alamance Technical Community College. Wayne continued his studies at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering. Career highlights include working as a draftsman for Hatteras Yachts and as a patent illustrator and intellectual property researcher for Rhodes, Coats & Bennett PLLC for 18 years.

A long-time resident of Greensboro, Wayne had many friends and acquaintances. He was fondly referred to by some as the town's 'Mayor.' Wayne was a gifted photographer and talented illustrator, an adept researcher, and a great conversationalist who was always up on current events. As a young man, he could rule the dance floor! Wayne loved life and found joy in the many social gatherings to which he was invited, especially trips with the Greensboro Ski and Outing Club, parties at friends' homes and at Belews Lake, family gatherings, and annual trips to NC's Outer Banks. Wayne also enjoyed life's simple pleasures-being on the water or near any beach and going to antique tractor shows, concerts, festivals, and movie theaters. As a friend, Wayne was always available to listen and could be counted on as a confidant. Often found helping others, Wayne will be remembered as a compassionate, kind man who will be greatly missed.

A memorial service to celebrate Wayne's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Alamance Presbyterian Church where he was a member. Immediate and extended family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alamance Presbyterian Church (4000 Presbyterian Road., Greensboro, NC 27406) or to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest N.C. (3330 Shorefair Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105) or the American Heart Association.

We were so surprised to learn of his death. He will be missed. We were part of the group that called him the Mayor. I wish we could be there at the funeral but we will be out of town. We are sending good vibes and light to the family.
With peace and love, Jill and Clayton Wiest

Very sorry to learn of Wayne's passing. There was not a nicer person in the entire world, and he was always friendly and gracious. Blessings.

My heart is broken by the sudden passing of my kind cousin/friend/confidant/partner-in-fun. We were always close, and when I separated from my husband in the 1980s, Wayne took me under his wing and invited me to all the coolest places and introduced me to cool and amazing people, many of whom became lifelong friends. I can´t wrap my head around the fact that we won´t be visiting again and that we won´t be on the phone into the wee hours solving all the world´s problems, or watching SNL together over the phone, or going to a costume party, or marveling over the Christmas balls hanging from trees at Sunset Park. May his spirit rest in peace knowing how much he was loved. In Loving Memory, Connie
