David Carl Sjolund
David Carl Sjolund, 82, of Gulfport, FL, passed away on September 14, 2018 after a long illness. He was born in Norwalk in 1935. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force, accepted a commission, and was trained as an Electronic Warfare Officer. During his Air Force career, David earned an Aeronautical Engineering degree from Auburn University. Serving in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict, he was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and numerous Air Medals. After a 21 year career, he retired to embark on a civilian defense industry career in Electronic Countermeasures working with Northrop, Litton, and Hughes Aircraft. David is licensed as a Professional Engineer in Florida. As a lifelong sailor, he was a member of Treasure Island Yacht Club and is currently a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and Pasadena Yacht and Country Club. David is a Life member of the Rolls Royce Owners' Club and he created, from his personal experience, a collection of hands on maintenance procedures that members still use. A longtime handball player, he supported USF's Recreational Dept. handball club and their interest in King High School handball club. In the spring of 2018, David was honored by the USF handball club for longtime support, naming a State tournament for him. He was predeceased by his sisters, Sue and Linda, of Norwalk, CT; and his son, Kent, of Sarasota, FL. David is survived by his wife, Carol; and son, Scott, of Oakland, MD. David will be buried at the National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL. He was a supporter of local charities and, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.
