Edgar Long Obituary

Judge Edgar H. Long, Jr.

Anderson - Judge Edgar Henderson Long, Jr, age 66, of Anderson, SC, passed away suddenly on January 15, 2021.

Born in Anderson, SC, on March 3, 1954, Ed was the only child of the late Edgar Henderson Long, Sr. and the late Martha Abernethy Long. Ed was educated in the public schools of Due West, SC and graduated from Erskine College, Class of 1976. After college, Ed earned his Masters in Public Administration. He received his law degree from USC Law School in 1981 and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar the same year.

Ed began his legal career with Legal Services Agency of Western Carolina where he served two years. He then began work for the Tenth Circuit Solicitor's Office assigned primarily to Family Court. Following his work with the law office of Chapman, King and Byrholdt, Ed began his private law practice of Long & Smith. He was elected in 2009, by the General Assembly of South Carolina, to the judicial bench.

Ed served in many local civic events, clubs, and charities. He served as president of the Anderson Roadrunners Running Club, past director of the Midnight Flight Road Race and past president of the Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium.

Ed had an insatiable love of music, attending hundreds of concerts and theater productions in his lifetime. He instilled this love and deep appreciation of music in his wife and children. He also had a deep love for the Andy Griffith Show, watching it daily. He enjoyed quoting many of the show's famous lines, particularly those of Ernest T. Bass.

Ed is survived by his wife of 45 years, Amy Tripp Long, of the home, and their two children, Amanda Long and Tripp Long and his wife Brittany, all of Greenville, SC.

The family will host a private memorial service. A public service will be planned for a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Home for Children, 110 Calvary Home Circle, Anderson, SC 29621.

Ed will always be remembered as an advocate for children and being a man known for honor and integrity. He was fair. He was equal. He was awesome.

Judge Long presided over the hearing for our son’s adoption in 2019. We have a photo of our family with him in our home and we cherish it greatly. We did not know Judge Long but he was so very kind to our family at that special time. No doubt he will be greatly missed by many.
