Johnnie Blanding Obituary

Wife, mother, and educator, Johnnie Butler Blanding of San Francisco passed away June 3, 2010 at the age of 68. She was born December 1, 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina to John and Nellie Butler. Johnnie graduated from Sterling High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in French from Johnson C. Smith University in 1963. She was married to James F. Blanding in 1976.
Johnnie was a high school French teacher until her relocation to San Francisco in 1976 and was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. During her time at Wade Hampton High School she rose to the head of the foreign languages department despite the obstacles of prejudice in her path. In San Francisco, she was active at Providence Baptist Church as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon's wife. She devoted her life to her family and was active in the family business, Bayview Property Managers. She enjoyed playing the piano, reading, and gardening.
She is survived by her husband James, son James R., daughter Cristen, stepdaughter April, grandchildren Jordyn, Christen and Thierry, and great-grandson Gein, all of San Francisco.
A wake will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Duggan's Funeral Services. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Providence Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.

To the Butler and Blanding Family,

Our hearts were sad when we heard of Johnnie’s death.
The children of Hiram and Ada Blanding wanted to let you know that you have our greatest sympathy.
We know that Johnnie’s passing will leave a void in the lives and hearts of all those who knew her. We are praying that this will be a time of looking to ‘the Author and Finisher of our faith’ (Hebrews 12:2). May God give each of you a greater hunger and thirst for Him (Matthew 5:6).

Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with you.

When those we love have left this earth, we still can feel them near. We'll see a picture, hear a song, and it’s just like they are here. And when we call upon our faith, when we believe and trust, we know the ones we care about are always close to us. -Constance Parker Graham

To the Butler-Blanding family - my sincere condolences go out to you in your time of sorrow. I was in Miss Butler's French class at Wade Hampton High School in 1972-1974. She always made the learning fun. I am pleased to learn that she was also head of the foreign language department. She deserved it. She will be greatly missed.
