Morris A. Kenig, 96, died Saturday, August 4, 2012 at The Arboretum at The Woodlands at Furman.
Born in Cape May, New Jersey, he was a son of the late Ansel Kenig and Golda Bergerfriend. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Jane McConnell Kenig and his second wife, Helen Ruth Lanahan Kenig.
A graduate of Cape May High School, he attended the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Richmond. He served in the U.S. military from 1942 until 1947 and in reserve duty from 1947 until 1976, retiring as Major, Mac, USAR. Following military service, he was affiliated with radio station WRNL and with American Yearbooks, both in Richmond, VA. In 1957, he moved to Greenville to Keys Printing Company where he was known as "Mr. Yearbook" to a generation of yearbook editors and advisors in North and South Carolina and Florida. He retired from Keys in 1980 as Vice President of the Education Division. Most recently, while semi-retired he was affiliated with Hunter Publishing Company,
A member of Church of the Redeemer - Episcopal, he served for thirty years as lay reader and chalice bearer, past junior warden, Sunday school superintendent, teacher, EYC sponsor, delegate to Diocesan Convention and Director of Brotherhood at St. Andrew.
Mr. Kenig served as past president of the Greenville Chapter of American Advertising Federation, State Lt. Governor of American Advertising Federation, Third District, and past president of Printing House Craftsmen, Greenville Chapter of Carolinas PICA. For many years he was active in Republican politics at precinct and county level. He was a long-time volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Project Host (soup kitchen).
The family expresses appreciation to Mary Lee with Heavenly Care Services and the skilled nursing staff at Arboretum of The Woodland at Furman.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen Elizabeth (Betsy) Byford of Greenville and Dr. Patricia Anne Curd of West Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Anne Morris Byford and Peter Bruce Byford; great-grandchildren, Anna Katherine Byford and Peter Kenig Byford; and a sister, Sarah Khan of New York.
Services will be Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Church of the Redeemer - Episcopal with the Rev. Charles T. Carlberg officiating.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Project Host , 525 S. Academy St., Greenville, SC 29601 or to Meals on Wheels, 15 Oregon St., Greenville, SC 29605.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Betsy Byford, 12 Broughton Dr., Greenville, SC 29609.
