Stephen Goodwin Obituary

Stephen Hilton Goodwin

Greenville

Stephen Hilton Goodwin, 62, died peacefully at home on Monday, December 23, in Greenville, SC after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Humble, hardworking, and a friend to all, Steve spent his last days at home with what meant the most to him in life, his family.

Born on June 12, 1951 in Waterbury, Connecticut, Steve was the son of Doris Beanland Goodwin and the late Andrew Wentworth Goodwin. He enjoyed playing all sports as a child, as well as cheering the New York Yankees. He attended Worcester Polytechnical Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA, where he studied Electrical Engineering, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), and met his lifelong love, Deborah Frances LaPlante. They married and moved to Greenville, SC, where Steve worked for JE Sirrine, O'Neal Inc, and Mustang Engineering; he was also an Elder in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. In his last year he was involved in the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, even speaking at the National PurpleLight Vigil about the importance of his faith during his illness. Steve's life will be defined by his love of and devotion to family, his faith in Jesus Christ, and how he always had an ear to listen and an encouraging word, no matter who you were. Even in his final days he remained gracious, loving, and kind, like he was his whole life.

He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Deborah Frances Goodwin of Greenville, SC; his daughter Tracey Goodwin Biggers (husband Branham) and granddaughter Chelsea Elizabeth Biggers of Greenville, SC; his son Andrew Hilton Goodwin (wife Ashley) and grandsons Gabriel Hilton and Judah Michalak Goodwin of Denver, CO; his son Matthew Lawrence Goodwin (wife Mandy) and grandson Grant Stephen Goodwin of Salt Lake City, UT; son Jonathan Stephen Goodwin (wife Jenna) of Carrboro, NC; his mother Doris Beanland Goodwin of Greensboro, NC; his sister Gainor Goodwin Urian of Laurel, DE; and his brother Peter Wentworth Goodwin of Marietta, GA. He was preceded in death by his father Andrew Wentworth Goodwin and his sister Ann Elise Goodwin.

Visitation will be held at Mackey Mortuary on Friday, December 27 from 5pm until 7pm. Funeral services will be at the same location the next day, Saturday, December 28 at 11am, with services led by the Rev. William Barron (311 Century Dr., Greenville, SC 29607).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to advance research, support patients, and create hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer. Donations may be made online at pancan.org, over the phone by calling 877-272-6226, or by check to 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266; include "In Memory of Steve Goodwin" in the memo line.

We are so diminished by this loss. He made us all better people. He was a hero - and a husband, father, leader. He was my friend. Be comforted that we all appreciated him so much. We respected him. We will miss him.
