Amrita Hutheesing Obituary

Hutheesing, Amrita
Amrita Hutheesing (née Nigam) of Stamford, CT, formerly of Greenwich, CT, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, April 3, 2015 at her home. She had been suffering from renal failure.

Amrita, 77, was born in London, England, the daughter of the late Gertrud and Dr. Bhairo Prasad Nigam. She was educated in England and attended finishing school in Switzerland. She later attended the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

After working for a publishing house in London, and the British Information Services and the United Nations in New York in the late 1950s, Amrita married Ajit Hutheesing in London in 1960. They had three sons - Nikhil Hutheesing born in London, Vivek Hutheesing born in Bombay, and Ravi Hutheesing born in Washington, D.C. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1984.

The family lived in Arlington and McLean, VA from 1965 to 1975 when they moved to Greenwich, CT. In Virginia and Connecticut, Amrita was an active volunteer in the community, mainly within the school systems. She also volunteered at the Greenwich Hospital and the Stamford Hospital where she tended to patients and handled administrative tasks.

Amrita will be remembered for being smart, insightful, wise, strong-willed, fashionable, organized, and for her good sense of humor. She was devoted to her sons. She raised her boys not by speaking down to them but with them. She instilled in them a sense of right from wrong and the need to be fair and kind to others. She taught them not to indulge in excess, not to be pretentious.

In her last few years, Amrita courageously accepted that renal failure would end her life. She wrote letters to her sons, spoke with them, and sent them books and articles so that they, too, would understand her plight and be prepared. While the matter was not funny, they would often end up in fits of laughter over the absurdities that resulted from her illness.

Amrita is survived by her three sons, her three grandchildren, Kirin Hutheesing, Remy Hutheesing and Mirai Hutheesing, her younger brother, Arun Nigam of Hong Kong, her three nephews, as well as by many relatives in Germany and India and friends from around the world.

Amrita will be honored at a private reception to be held in early June in Greenwich, CT.
