David Borie Obituary

DAVID B. BORIE, former Time-Life executive, dies at the age of 83. David Boyd Borie, a former Time-Life executive, died in Greenwich on July 14 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Abington, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry Peter Borie, sales executive and active member of The First City Troup in Philadelphia, and Lysbeth Knickerbocker Boyd, accomplished author and renowned poet. Mr. Borie was a graduate of The William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia and Yale University, class of '51, where he played varsity football and was a member of Chi Psi fraternity. Mr. Borie served his country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, receiving the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, the Bronze Star with Combat V, and a Purple Heart. He rose to the rank of Captain in the Marine Corps Reserves. Following his service in the Marines, Mr. Borie embarked on a 30 year career with Time-Life from which he retired as European Marketing Director in London. During his tenure at the magazine, Mr. Borie supported early adoption of computer technologies and pioneered new marketing strategies based on Zip Code analysis that is now standard industry practice. Post retirement, Mr. Borie founded a consulting practice which specialized in marketing, decision science and computer services. A longtime resident of Greenwich, CT and Nantucket, MA, Mr. Borie was active in his community. He served on the board of the local United Way and was affiliated with several organizations and associations including: Society of Colonial Wars and The Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution. Mr. Borie was an active member of The Brook, Round Hill Club, The Field Club, The Nantucket Yacht Club, The Sankaty Head Golf Club and Rolling Rock Club. An avid sports enthusiast, Mr. Borie especially enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie associated with shooting sports, upland game hunting and fishing by surf or stream. Above all, "DB" was passionate about his family. He was a devoted husband of 61 years to his wife, Mary, and possessed a tireless enthusiasm for the endeavors and interests of his children and grandchildren. Mr. Borie is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Washington Borie and his four children, Mary W. Zara of New Canaan, CT, David B. Borie Jr. of Denver, CO, J. Stewart Borie of San Diego, CA and Lyssa B. Righi of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at St. Barnabas Church in Greenwich, CT on September 22 at 11:30 am. Dave was a genuine gentleman of good humor and full of kindness. My wife Linda and I had the good fortune to meet Mary and Yale roommate Dave for lunch last April after 60 years without any contact! It was a great pleasure and we all will miss him.
