David Griswold Obituary

David H. Griswold
DAVID H. GRISWOLD, 92, of Greenwich, passed away at Greenwich Hospital on Sunday, August 4, 2024. He was surrounded by his family. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 1, 1932, David was the son of the late Robertson and Abbie (Roberts) Griswold.
He was raised in Baltimore and graduated from Gilman School. David earned a bachelor's degree from Williams College in Massachusetts, and a master's degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He proudly served his country for two years of active duty with the United States Air Force and was a beloved educator for over 55 years. The majority of David's career was spent at Greenwich Country Day School, where he taught English, before taking on the role of Faculty Mentor at the end of his 50-year tenure there. Even in his early nineties, he reported to GCDS daily and planned to continue doing so in the fall. David enjoyed being a part of GCDS's community and formed many strong connections with colleagues and students over the years. He served as the co-editor of Mindscapes, the faculty literary magazine. David worked with William E. Merriss to co-author "A Composition Handbook", and also wrote a book titled "How to Study". He was happily married to the love of his life, Anne (Miller) Griswold, for 31 years until she predeceased him in 2006.
David was also predeceased by his two older brothers, Robertson Griswold, Jr. and Sloan Griswold. He leaves his nieces, Zina Makucin and her husband, Steve, Elisabeth Kerrigan and her husband, Michael, Julia Talisman and her husband, Jared. He also leaves his nephews, Sam, Oliver, and Avery Kerrigan.
Though he lived a very long life, David always remained young at heart and will be sorely missed.
His burial will be private. The family wishes to acknowledge Mlungisi Nalovu ("Lou"), for the excellent care that he provided over the years. Contributions in David Griswold's memory may be made to Greenwich Hospital, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT 06830, or to your favorite charity.

Mr. Griswold was one of my favorite teachers, ever!! And that includes St. Paul´s School, Harvard College, and the University of Virginia Law School, Juilliard, and Peabody Conservatory. And a wonderful human being whom I hope to know and see in "the life of the world to come."

There are no words that truly capture all that Dave was to countless people throughout his life. Kind, caring, sensitive, giving, intelligent, supportive, jovial, and thoughtful only begin the list. Indeed, he was a gentleman to the highest degree. I have worked with Dave for the past 33 years and consider him as one of my closest and dearest friends. He will be deeply missed though his memory will live on. Personally, his wisdom and goodness will guide me forever. I am blessed to have had him in my life. My prayers and condolences go out to his entire family whom he adored.
