Dennis C. Lyndon
Naval Officer and Real Estate Developer, Dies at 83
Dennis C. Lyndon, a distinguished naval officer turned real estate developer, passed away on August 27, 2024, in Rye Brook, New York. He was 83.
Born on July 30, 1941, in Hawaii, Dennis was the eldest child of Rear Admiral Dennis C. Lyndon and Winifred Lyndon. His arrival in the world occurred just months before the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, a fact that seemed to foreshadow a life deeply intertwined with the sea and service. As the son of a Rear Admiral, Dennis's formative years were spent in various parts of the world where his father was stationed, an experience that cultivated in him a global perspective and a keen appreciation for different cultures. His mother, a leader in the Navy Relief Society, imparted to him a profound sense of compassion and duty-qualities that would become hallmarks of his life and career.
Dennis followed in his father's footsteps, attending the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated with a degree in Engineering, concentrating in Nuclear Physics and Electrical Engineering. His academic rigor was matched by his dedication to his country, as he served with distinction as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy's fledgling nuclear submarine program for five years. Recruited by Admiral Hyman Rickover, the "Father of the Nuclear Navy", Dennis served at a pivotal juncture during the transition of the fleet to nuclear power. His time in the Navy was marked by a commitment to excellence and a deep respect for the power of technology, both of which would guide his future endeavors.
After his naval service, Dennis sought to further his education, earning an MBA from Harvard Business School. Armed with a combination of technical acumen and business savvy, he entered real estate development with a mission to bring infrastructure and technology to communities that had been overlooked. His work, which focused on the development of science research parks, was not merely a career but a calling. Through his company, he played a pivotal role in fostering environments where innovation could thrive, always with an eye toward the greater good.
Dennis met Kathryn, an educator with a deep love for learning, in New York City. They were married in 1975 and spent the next 49 years building a life centered on family, education, and the sea. Together, they raised three daughters-Katie, Christina, and Stephanie-instilling in them the values of integrity, hard work, and a deep respect for the natural world. An accomplished sailor, Dennis was a past commodore of the Rocky Point Club, and his passion for the ocean was a legacy he passed down to his children and grandchildren.
Later in life, Dennis became an avid croquet player, finding joy and camaraderie in the sport at the Mariner Sands Club in Stuart, Florida, where he and Kathryn retired.
Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn; his daughters Katie Kehoe (John), Christina Winstead (Trevor), and Stephanie Storm (Andrew); his three siblings; and eight grandchildren, whom he cherished. His life will be celebrated at a Memorial Mass on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside, Conn. In accordance with his wishes, a second memorial service will be held in the coming months at the U.S. Naval Academy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to SoundWaters, an organization dedicated to the protection of Long Island Sound, a cause close to Dennis's heart.
