Greta Pofcher Obituary

Pofcher, Greta R.
Greta R. Pofcher, 82, died peacefully after complications from a stroke on Saturday, December 21, at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco. She was the loving wife for 33 years of her late husband, Munroe; the caring mother of her son, Scott Pofcher and his wife Sally Pofcher, of Wilmette, Illinois; her daughter, Janet Johnson and her husband Gunnar Johnson, of Plymouth, Minnesota; devoted grandmother to 6 grandchildren; and faithful friend to many. After living in Greenwich, Connecticut for more than 30 years, she made her new residence in San Francisco, California in the mid 2000's and enjoyed spending summers in Wayzata, Minnesota.
Greta was a strong supporter and advocate for many community organizations in both Greenwich and San Francisco. In Greenwich, she was a board member and supporter of The Bruce Museum of Arts and Science and very involved in Stanwich Congregational Church. In San Francisco, she was a strong supporter of the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums as well as the San Francisco Ballet. She also was a volunteer teacher of archeology in the Greenwich school systems for many years.
Greta was an extremely generous, friendly, enthusiastic and elegant woman. A life-long learner, birder and world traveler, Greta was still attending classes regularly at the Fromm Institute in San Francisco. She traveled to over 130 countries, including many as an international flight attendant with Pan American World Airways. She especially enjoyed her travels to East Africa and to the North Pole. She was a 1953 graduate of Cornell University, and held a master's from Norwalk Community College in Archaeology.
A memorial service will be held in San Francisco in January.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Fine Arts Museums Foundation of San Francisco and/or to the San Francisco Ballet Association.

I had the honor and great pleasure of working with Greta to remodel her lovely garden. Every visit was a delight. She cared about every detail in her home and still took a sincere interest in people. We had many wonderful talks about art, travel and gardens. She gave me her extra museum tickets so I wouldn't miss anything. She also shared wonderful stories about the family that meant more to her than anything. I will miss her dearly.
