James Murphy Obituary

James Michael Murphy, a long time resident of Stamford and Greenwich, died August 3rd peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his loving children. Jim was born in Greenwich on May 20, 1932, and attended Greenwich High School. A gifted athlete, he lettered in baseball and football. At the outbreak of the Korean War, Jim volunteered for the Army and Trained as a Ranger and later a Paratrooper.
After his service, Jim attended the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy and graduated in 1956 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was Captain of the football team at MSM, and played as both a wide receiver and defensive end.
After graduation, Jim joined the engineering Division of AMF and worked as a design engineer on government missile-launching systems and as a sales engineer for air cargo handling systems. When AMF moved his department out of the area, Jim joined his mother's real estate firm Murphy and Murphy Real Estate. He specialized in land and new housing developments.
Jim opened Murphy's Townhouse Café, with daughter Dawn in 1980. After 32 years it is still a thriving downtown neighborhood pub where he enjoyed lunch daily.
An avid golfer, Jim was a member of the Innis Arden Golf Club for more than 20 years. He enjoyed traveling and played in tournaments and at top-rated courses around the world. He has 3 lifetime holes-in-one.
Jim is predeceased by his daughter Kathleen, his son James Michael Murphy, Jr., his parents James and Kathleen "Kitty" Murphy and sister Louise Pflumm.
He is survived by his former wife Maryann Murphy, daughters Maureen Murphy Kenefick and her husband Tim of New Canaan, Connecticut, Dawn Murphy Deehan and her husband George of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and Jennifer Murphy Wikman and her husband Todd of Stamford, Connecticut and a son, Terrence Murphy of Stamford, Connecticut, as well as 6 grandchildren: Melissa Murphy, Hugo Fueglein, James Murphy, Dan Deehan, Mark Murphy and Tim Deehan. He is also survived longtime loving friend Barbara Olsen.
In addition, Jim is survived by his sister Ann Conti of Noank, Connecticut, William Murphy of Wilmington, Delaware, Jack Murphy of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Daniel Murphy.
The family will receive friends at the Bosak Funeral Home at 435 Shippan Avenue in Stamford, CT from 4 pm to 8 pm on Monday, August 6, 2012. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Stamford, CT at 11am. Interment will follow at the Putnam Cemetery, 35 Parsonage Road, in Greenwich, CT.
Mr. Murphy's family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Bosak Funeral Home & Cremation, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT. How well I remember Jim coming into the "TOWNHOUSE" everyday for lunch.
