Not sure what to say?

March 28, 2018

I met Martin when both of us were financial executives - Martin at AMAX and me at Molycorp. At that time the American Mining Congress Association had blown out conventions alternating yearly between Las Vegas and Denver. It was there that my wife, Eileen and I met and got to know Martin and Sabina. We also realized that they lived in Greenwich and we in Bedford and would socialize when Martin and I were not traveling. We had a lot of good times together at the conventions, at each other's homes and WCC beach club. Eileen and Sabina were also frequent attendees at weekday mass at Saint Michaels.

Martin had no false airs. Martin truly loved Sabina.

Martin was an intelligent, charismatic businessman, Chase Brass colleague and friend. He treated everyone he met with the utmost respect, both professionally and personally. He wanted you to be the very best you could be and that came from his heart. He truly was a man who left the world a better place.
You are missed, Martin. Being a part of your life was an honor.

To the Alonzo family
Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

I love you.

SAVANNAH SMILES
Martin Alonzo, a provider of many smiles to the Savannahians who were fortunate enough to know him. He was the ultimate gentleman and so kind that when in his presence you would find yourself with a broad smile on your face. It was contagious. Martin was a brilliant, innovative man who was admired by many in Savannah, New York and on the international scale. An elegant, sophisticated and worldly man who made all who knew him feel important and welcome.

To my father, John W. Stephens, Jr., a native of Savannah and lifelong resident, Martin was his closest friend and confident. My father would so often announce to us that "Martin called today" and with that announcement came the broadest smile. If Martin paid a visit to Savannah, it was a celebration! My father had the utmost trust in Martin and a great admiration for his accomplishments. He was my fathers "go to man" for advice and direction.

Good times, good advice, good men and the best of friends. The Stephens family is so grateful for Martin's friendship with my Father and his family. We miss them both and most of all their smiles.

I met Martin Alonzo for the first time after working at Chase for two weeks as a Marketing Coordinator. I was 23 years old, fresh out of college, and had the opportunity to work with this brilliant man and charismatic leader. Martin was tough, demanding, but it was clear that he cared about his people and his company. He was passionate about doing what was right and pushed Chase to be proactive and to look to the future. One of my first responsibilities was writing the annual report with Martin. The first year, the initial draft had about 40 edits per page because he wanted everything to be perfect. By the third year, the first draft had less than five edits per page. He helped me develop the skills to effectively summarize the business operations in a clear and concise manner.

Martin was never afraid to give direction or constructive criticism because he wanted you to be your best. He knew that optimizing an employee's abilities would also ultimately benefit the company. The first day I met Martin, I was walking in from the parking lot. It was 8:28 am; we started at 8:30. He called my name, introduced himself and then advised me that if he were new to the company, he would arrive way before 8:28 to make a positive impression. I thanked him for his advice, but I was thinking Holy Cow, I thought I was on time! Martin's mentoring and insight really helped shape the direction of my career. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to work with him at Chase Brass. Not only a great business person, he was a caring human being who had the best interests of his people at heart. Martin never met a stranger in the Chase plant or in the offices. He made a point to get to know everyone by name. That made a huge impression on the workforce.

Mr. Alonzo left Chase Brass a better company than he found it. We were lucky to call him our leader for many years. He is greatly missed.

Dear family Alonzo,

My deepest condolences. My name is Dr. Keiichiro Oishi, the R&D Fellow for Mitsubishi Shindoh (formerly Sambo Copper Alloy Co.) of Osaka, Japan. I invented ECO BRASS in the late 1990's; a lead-free, free-cutting copper alloy to be used in many potable water applications because lead-containing alloys were increasingly restricted in Japan. We approached the Copper Development Association in the US with a solution and were referred to Chase Brass.

Half way around the world, a company based in Montpelier Ohio off State Route 15 was looking for this type of alloy. When I first met Chase Brass people, they were already so interested in ECO BRASS, a lead-free, free-cutting copper alloy developed by a Japanese company and had a lot of expectations in the alloy that I was truly impressed. I particularly remember that prior to the contact by Sambo, I could see it was apparent to their then Chairman, Mr. Alonzo in 1995, that the future of Chase and the brass rod industry would require a lead-free rod product that can be used in a variety of industrial applications. With this in mind, he sent his management team to Europe and Asia looking for a solution.

After two years of research and verification, we entered into an exclusive North American license agreement with Chase in 2005. Chase Industries led the way in North America offering a lead free replacement for the leaded brass used for so many years in potable water applications. ECO BRASS became, and is, the dominant lead free brass rod alloy used today around the world.

Sincerely,
Dr. Keiichiro Oishi

November 12, 2017

A few weeks ago, I received a disheartening return email from Marlene informing me that Mr. Alonzo had passed away. I am one of his scholarship students, a graduate of both Brooklyn Technical High School and Baruch College. Although it was an honor to be the first in my family to graduate high school and college, it was of equal honor to have attended the same schools as Mr. Alonzo and to have received his immeasurable support and advice.

Throughout my educational career, I have frequently corresponded with Mr. Alonzo telling him how I was doing or not doing. He sent me a letter in 2012. He told me that "In life everyone experiences setbacks and disappointments. The successful people learn from their experiences, never lose faith in themselves and move ahead." I took these words to heart and worked tirelessly to improve myself and to be as successful as I could be.

Today, I have graduated with both my Bachelors and Masters. I recently passed the CPA exam and am now working at one of the major accounting firms.

Thank you for making this possible.

MONSIEUR Martin Alonzo was a wonderful person whom I remember with great respect. We worked together at AMAX Inc. in the 70-80's. Martin was the CFO and I was head of AMAX Europe.

One of our goals at the time was to be listed on the London, Paris,Frankfurt, Luxembourg and Vienna stock exchanges. With Martin's help, we not only became listed, we developed a 20% European shareholder base! But, I also remember in the early days, when Martin sent Hap Connolly to the Paris office to straighten us out. We, French are a little disorganized!!

He was an absolute professional who inspired elegance and respect, though he was always ready with a kind word and a great smile. All Europeans appreciated him very much. He was definitely UN GRAND MONSIEUR and we shall miss him.

Condolences to Sabina, his children and especially Marlene whom I had the pleasure to meet in Paris many years ago.

It was a pleasure to have known Martin both as a colleague and a friend. Martin was full of energy and such a life force. Whether it was work or social, Martin was always high spirited and a joy to be with. Moreover, he was a true friend and always supportive. We will miss you very much.

Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo came for the first time to the Excelsior in Ischia in June 2004 to celebrate their anniversary and meet up with friends from Luxembourg. Immediately, they conquered everyone with their friendliness and kindness molto simpatico. Mr. Alonzo was a great entertainer and always had a funny story to tell or an interesting experience from his rich life to share with us.

They had their beloved room every year (223, with a beautiful terrace overlooking our park and the Gulf of Naples). The Alonzo's stay was characterized by some small rituals: the large wine list - one year they started at the top, the following year at the bottom. Finally, they got through most of them. Mr. Alonzo and Sabina would stop at Bagno Antonio on the beach for bruschetta. They enjoyed having lunch at Neptunus overlooking the sea in Sant'Angelo, a fishermen village accompanied by the same driver Giovanni.

Giovanni and Peppe, our concierge told us a story that shows how honorable and proper Mr. Alonzo was. The first time Giovanni drove Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo to Forio there was a misunderstanding: Giovanni asked for Euro 50, but did not pronounce the number well and Mr. Alonzo understood Euro 15. When Giovanni received only Euro 15 instead of Euro 50, he complained, but Mr. Alonzo imagined that he was trying to cheat him. He was offended and did not want the money. The next year, Mr. Alonzo used another taxi driver for the same route and became aware of Giovanni's integrity. He asked Peppe to look for him and when they finally met again he insisted on giving Giovanni the Euro 50 of the previous year! This was the strange beginning of a decade long good friendship between Giovanni and Mr. Alonzo. From that day on, Giovanni was their driver.

Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo loved Ischia and we loved them!

It is with a very sad heart that I learned, this past Saturday evening, of the passing of Mr. Alonzo. He was truly a favorite client of mine, a gentleman with a very kind heart.

I first met Mr. Alonzo when he would come to dine at La Cremaillere with other members of the AMAX Inc. Board. Later on we had the pleasure of having him and Sabina come as patrons and it was always fun to banter back and forth about the differences between Italian and French wines and our preferences. He was truly a "bon vivant", and I would enjoy watching him engage other willing clients in conversations about travel, politics, and, of course, food and wine! It is not that we saw them every day, but when Mr. Alonzo was here with us, his wonderful personality filled the room and gave us the warm feeling of friendship.

A very kind man, a gentleman, the kind that we do not have the pleasure of seeing much anymore. Mr. Alonzo, we are going to truly miss you knowing that we will not be entertained by your wonderful travel stories and your appreciation of life. I can see you very clearly sitting at your table and I will continue looking in that direction.

I first met Martin Alonzo in 1988. I had moved from Canada to work as a Registered Nurse at the Greenwich Hospital. This is where I met and became fast friends with his daughter Sabrina. She brought me to her family's home for my first American Thanksgiving and I was welcomed warmly as if I were one of the family.

From that time on I had a second family-my Italian family in the US. I spent so many happy times with the Alonzo's - not just on holidays, but Sunday dinners and other celebrations. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He introduced me to the delights of Limoncello and Sambuca. I let him put the Sambuca in my espresso and he was always generous!

It was obvious that his world revolved around family adored his children and grandchildren. He was kind and generous and I felt that he cared about me as if I were another daughter.

Even after I returned to Canada in 1998, I still felt close to the Alonzo's. Mr. Alonzo invited me to join them on a family trip to Rome in June 2002 which remains one of the happiest times of my life. I have such great memories of that trip-so many good times, so much laughter.

It's hard to find the words to express how much he meant to me. He was my Italian father and I loved him like a father. I'm so grateful to have had him in my life. May he forever rest in peace.

It was my absolute pleasure to work many years with Martin in his capacity as Chief Financial Officer of Amax. At the time, I was working for Chase Manhattan Bank and led their non-ferrous precious metals group. We acted as the lead financial advisor to Amax. Martin and his team worked closely with Chase to do the very first loan structured as a production payment. It was a very innovative way to help Amax reduce its exposure to the ever-fluctuating price of Molybdenum.

Martin always thought outside the box. He would listen carefully to legal counsel on both sides but knew just the right way to tweak the language to make documents acceptable to both parties and get the job done. A man truly larger than life, Martin was the precursor to our current president in the Art of the Deal.

I enjoyed working with Martin and got to know his wonderful family. He was of keen intellect but also a very compassionate and loyal man. He made time always not just for work, but for family and friends.

His was a journey of a life well lived!

May he rest in peace.

All the great times shared with the Alonzo family! Our Saturday night dinner and bridge games and of course all the pool parties.

And in the later years, Marty's unquestionable support. His was always a positive, prompt and practical response.

A very dear friend. He will be missed.

The first time I laid my eyes on those two Yankees in 1965, I said Oh boy, these are our new neighbors Sabina with her shorts and high heels (not a southern thing). Little did I know how much we would grow to love this family and remain friends for over 50 years.

Marty was a tall, nice-looking man with a great sense of humor. He was kind, funny and always friendly. If you needed him, he was there. Marty was a loving husband and father. Family always came first.

I am happy to have had the pleasure of Martin and his family as my neighbor and friends.

By the way, most of us in Savannah still don't wear shorts with high heels! Maybe the youngsters do!

Love and prayers,

I am so sorry to hear of Martin's passing. It was an honor and a pleasure working with him during my time at Chase Brass. He used to tell me, "pay attention to detail and you will do a great job no matter what you do." I took that advice to heart and have passed it along to my children and grandchildren. He was truly an exceptional person. Please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss.

Martin was already at AMAX when I joined in 1967. Part of Martin's job was to build a top notch organization with well qualified financial people ------and that's where I came in. Through my 10.5 years in the HR department at AMAX, we assisted him in achieving that goal.

I learned so much working with him, not only his insistence on quality people with integrity, a willingness to work hard with strong relationship building skills and people with no hidden agendas ----------- Good Character.

I went to visit Martin in the 90's and had a great visit. When I left he said to me we really put in some good people at AMAX --------I said Thanks, but it was really you who did it.

When many of us in the coming years would meet every six weeks for Saturday breakfast at the Plaza Coffee restaurant, I told the Group while Martin was with us, that Martin taught me much of what I know today about people. We were always happy to see him as we recognized the positive impact he had on the company and for that matter on most of us.

In summary, he was pure and simple a good man. While he could be demanding at times, it was because of insistence of good people with character.

May he rest in Peace, Amen

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Martin Alonzo but reminded of his fine qualities. I worked for Chase Brass during the 1990's. Mr. Alonzo was a great leader. He was passionate and cared about people. I worked closely with him during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Torch project. He fully supported the cause because it gave us great pride. Like the Olympic Torch, he was an inspiration. The copper and brass industry will miss him. May he rest in peace.

May his soul Rest In Peace. My condolences to you and the family.

When Martin took over the company the employees thought he would never be in NW Ohio at the plant. However, Martin was at the Montpelier, Ohio plant at least one week per month for the 12 years that he was involved with the company. Martin would stay next door to the plant at the Holiday Inn and he would drive a small economy rental car.

Martin's favorite place to eat in Williams County was this place called Sam's Place. It was in the little town of Blakeslee, Ohio. Sam's Place was a 3rd generation owned restaurant with the menu written on cardboard and posted on the wall. Martin soon became good friends with the Mohre family that owned Sam's Place. I'm sure Sabina will remember going to Sam's Place.

Martin loved to put on a uniform jacket and a hard hat and go out in to the plant. He knew many of the employees by name and he often worked late when he was at the plant.

Martin met a local gentleman while having breakfast at the hotel next to the plant. He found out they were purchasing small amounts of brass, but not from Chase. He brought them in for a visit and they started buying from Chase. He always asked about them and called them his customer. He would always say, Are you taking good care of my customer?

Martin had a great memory and would always check on employees and ask about ill family members. In 2004 I gave my sister a kidney. Martin was very supportive during the time and he even called the hospital to speak to my husband and check on us.

Martin took time with people to share his story and to share words of advice and encouragement. Many at Chase Brass looked up to him as a mentor and a friend.

Chase Brass had great success under Martin's leadership and the company enjoyed more than a decade of growth and expansion. Martin was not afraid to take risks and he always wanted to be number one in the industry.

The time I spent with the Chase people was the best time in my 50 year business career. Martin Alonzo

Marco, my husband who died on January 1st 2012, is of Italian origin. We are both from Luxembourg and had planned this fabulous trip to Australia. It was in Sidney where we first met the group and especially Sabina and Martin. Was it due to their Italian roots, was it because of various other common interests, Marco and Martin became friends. I remember both sitting together, chatting and especially laughing their heads off during the whole trip. And Marco concluding each time: 'Martin, you are a real Italian! Once Italian, always Italian.'
We told Sabina and Martin about Ischia where we loved to go every year and Sabinas roots being in Napoli just opposite Ischia, they decided to join us the following year. They loved the place as much as we did and since, we met regularly until Marcos death. After that, I had never again the courage to visit Ischia but had every year a feedback via email from Martin about their stay! I will miss that as I will miss his regular mails! May he rest in peace!

Everyone at Chass Brass has a special place in their heart for Martin because it was obvious to us that he had a special place in his heart for us. He had such vision for the future, and was so instrumental in bringing this company to the level at which it has become. We thank you with everything that we are for allowing us to be part of your lives. And we will always hold your family in highest regards. Memories of Martin Alonzo
When I first met him, I liked him immediately because he had lived in Savannah, GA and my family had ties there. But, little did I know that he was a religious man who was driven to excel while having a generous heart.

Martin was a complicated man and if you were trying to describe him, one saying comes to mind. If you're going to talk the talk, you've got to walk the walk Martin pushed his employees to excel but never asked anything more than what he asked of himself.

He arrived for his monthly one week visit in a small domestic vehicle and parked it right next to the guard shack. This might not sound like much but when you consider Chase Brass plant employees were unionized. Martin made a point to spend many hours on the production floor getting to know employees personally.

Martin also liked to sit in the Sales Service office to listen to the demands of customers and hear how our sales service employees responded. One night he had stayed in the office working after hours when the toll free line rang and it was a customer from Chicago who had forgotten it was after hours. Martin picked up the phone an answered Chase Brass may I help you? The customer said he had an order to place and Martin took the information down. After which the customer asked who he was speaking to as he did not recognize the voice. Martin said his name and the customer asked what Martins responsibilities were. Martin responded that he was the CEO and the customer quickly responded that if Martin was the CEO, the customer was a brain surgeon and hung up! He later found out that in fact he had been speaking to the new CEO. He called and apologized and Martin and Bob Chew became good friends.

At Chase his legacy is both the group of professionals he helped to assemble and the capital he invested in the company which allowed it to be the dominant leader it is today. It was his vision that our product offering would require a lead free alloy before legislation mandated that for use in potable water products. He did achieve it. Martin was most proud of Project 400: increased production to 400 million pounds, allowed flexibility to produce a variety of alloys and products and provides continuous employment for over 300 associates.

It is an honor and privilege to stand up in front of you all, representing his Chase family and tell you our hearts are heavy as we grieve his passing but we know that the company today is the company he envisioned and remains a great legacy of his leadership. It was a privilege to know him and his family and work with him to create that vision. Martin, I salute you on behalf of your Chase Brass family.

I had the pleasure of working with Martin for over 10 years at Chase Industries and had seen him annually at investor conferences. We joked over the years that I received my MVA, which was much better than an MBA from any college or university. In many ways, that was true. I learned a great deal from Martin over the years. Martin was very bright and asked good probing questions. Martin had grace under pressure and was always a kind gentleman. Martin's family and friends have my deepest sympathies and condolences.

Martin was a good man, a longtime loyal and supportive client and a great friend. I started doing work for Martin as a young attorney, and when the partner who had the original relationship left our firm Martin had confidence in me and continued to rely on me for legal counsel. He made me a better lawyer because, no matter what the topic or issue, I knew I had to be 200% prepared to address any and all questions Martin would raise...and he wanted to do what was right and treat people right. Martin became a dear friend over the years, and Kim and I always enjoyed getting together with Martin and Sabina and just talking with them over dinner...Martin always had good conversation. I am really going to miss him.

November 29, 2016

I am deeply saddened to learn about Martin's passing! We communicated with Martin up to less than three weeks ago about his attendance to the Yale Stem Cell Center's 10th anniversary celebration. He and Mrs. Alonzo looked forward to joining the celebration but at the last minute Martin told us that he could not attend because he did not feel well. I hoped to see him soon, so this news came as such a shock to me and to everyone at Yale.

Martin was a wonderful persona passionate person, a person of principle, and a person with a big heart. He not only generously supported the Yale Stem Cell Center's research in the past several years, but also took genuine and deep interest in what we do. He came to our annual scientific retreat every year, asked many incisive questions, and made inspiring comments. I feel so fortunate to have known Martin as a friend. My colleagues and I at the Yale Stem Cell Center will always remember Martin, his hope in stem cell research, and his confidence in us. We will continue to strive to achieve his dreams.

Dear Alonzo family members: please accept my heart-felt condolences to you. If there is any thing that we can do during this difficult time for you, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Mr. Alonzo was such a good man and I will always remember him that way. I loved talking with him about various topics because I thought he was one of the smartest people I had ever met. He started small, but due to his financial mind, was able to grow into an empire of sorts. As a result, he never forgot where he started and was extremely generous to those who wanted to achieve and who had the drive. Every time I would visit, I would either talk to him on the phone or in person. I enjoyed each and every conversation with him because I always managed to learn something. I will miss him.
