Richard Stubbs Obituary

STUBBS Richard Unwin Stubbs died at his home on September 7. The cause of death was colon cancer. Born October 13, 1938, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Charles Stubbs, Sr., and Charlotte Waters Stubbs, Dick grew up in Bridgeport before the family moved to Fairfield. After graduating from Fairfield Prep in 1956, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in physics at Fairfield University in 1960. He retired after a 24-year career at IBM highlighted by his leadership as procurement manager for South America. Following his retirement, Dick began his 18-year career in real estate as a team with his companion and partner Dee Dee (DeChantal) Nespeco Alaimo, affiliated with Prudential CT Real Estate, in the Greenwich office. Dick had a passion for words and often could be found sitting on the beach at Greenwich Point doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. He was a consummate wordsmith, and fond of saying "a pun is the lowest form of humor." His devotion to words was mirrored by his catholic faith and devotion to God. His zeal for the English language extended to the spoken word. He was known for livening the conversation in any social setting with interests in photography, golf, sailing, fishing, the latest Puzzler from NPR's Car Talk, and his beloved Yankees. The dinner party was Dick's favored setting, serving his equal love of food. He especially loved all forms of dessert and marked the conclusion of a good meal by channeling his father's noted phrase that he had "reached an elegant sufficiency." Dick is predeceased by his parents and twin brother Dr. Robert Manion Stubbs. He is survived by his brother Charles Waters Stubbs; sister Suzanne Stubbs; four sons, Richard and his wife Carolyn of Yardley, PA; Jonathan and his wife Maryanne of Brooklyn, NY; Andrew and his wife Kelly of Newtown, CT; Timothy and his wife Laurie also of Newtown, CT; as well as nine grandchildren, Hannah, Kiera, Ryan, Kyle, Gavin, Carolina, Charlotte, Ella and Benjamin; and former wife Anne T. Stubbs. Also celebrating Dick are Dee Dee's four children, Jane Alaimo of Berkeley, CA; Christine Alaimo Savarino and her husband Lou of Lexington, MA; Dr. Peter J. Alaimo and his wife Erica Orr of Zurich, Switzerland, and Seattle, WA; and Katherine Alaimo McMillan and her husband Scott of San Anselmo, CA; along with Dee Dee's four grandchildren, Louis, Grace, Emily, and Caroline. A cherished group of family, friends and colleagues will miss this consummate gentleman who had a sense of humor, was always loving and eager to lend a helping hand. A memorial service will be held at St Michael The Archangel Parish, 469 North Street, Greenwich, at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 22. The Reverend Robert O'Neil will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Projects for the Poor of Cameroon, at Mill Hill Missionaries, 237 62nd St., New York, NY 10065. Donations can also be made to Autism Speaks at autismspeaks.org.

We met at Brimfield in the fall 2010. We had the pleasure of meeting him and he was so much fun to be around, even in the face of his illness. We will have a Vodka Tonic with a twist of lime, just like he taught us, in his honor tonight.
Blessing and prayers for Deedee and his Family.
