While I never met Mr. Heyward, I had the pleasure of watching his son Cameron play for PRHS during his senior year. It was through that connection I learned about Mr. Heyward and found out that he was a wonderful person, loving father and terrific football player. For some reason I felt drawn to look up Craig "Ironhead" Heyward today not knowing it's the anniversary of his death. Cameron and other family members, my heart reaches out to you on this day of remembrance. Take care and God Bless.

I can't believe it has been a year.
I wanted you in my life forever.
And although I really miss you,
in my heart I know that you are at peace.
Still, countless times throughout the day
I find myself remembering you.
Although I cannot see or hear you,
I know that you are with me.
I'll feel you in the warmth of the summer sun.
I'll see you in the brilliance of autumn leaves.
You'll rejoice with me at the emergence
of the first flowers of spring.
I'm thankful for the times we shared
and the priceless memories too;
those memories are a comfort now when I lovingly remember you.

"Iron" we go way back I mean so far back I usually just called you Craiggy, not even sure how to spell that. We played basketball at the P.A.L at an age so young they lowered the rims for us I used to think they HAVE to be kidding with craig we gonna kill these kids . You were a man amongst kids at PHS, wasn't even fair to the other teams.I made all county as a slow lineman not cause i blocked so well but because if i did mess up they couldn't tackle you anyway. I hadn't seen ya since you left school but always kept track of you. You will surely be missed, great person and a GREAT sense of humor. God bless you and your family. You get up with Kevin up there in heaven and enjoy a better place rest in peace.

If you knew of him, you wished you knew him. If you knew him then you were blessed to have had a great friend in your life. We had a lifetime of memory's together growing up from little boys. The memory that stays close to my heart is the time we all chipped in to buy our favorite record which became our theme song for that summer and many summers to follow. When you loose someone like craig you loose more than a friend you loose your life long brother but he left me with many memory's. A legacy that time can never erase. One love to my brother always.

It is always difficult to say good-bye to a friend, a man who lived life to the fullest. I know that I am not losing a friend but, that I am entrusting you to another friend who sticketh closer than a brother and who will take better care of you than anyone ever could. Thank you for the grace inwhich you embraced life, thank you for the love you gave to others, thank you for the laughter you brought but, most of all thank you for the wonderful memories that will always remain in my heart and be a constant reminder of the dignity of a real man.

We wish our deepest condolences to the family of Ironhead Heyward. He was a man that had a lot of heart.

Back in the days of Jim Mora and the New Orleans Saints. The defense feared him. I was in Washington DC at RFK stadium. Ironhead get the ball and runs in for 6. The defence couldn't get out of the way fast enough as Iron head knocked them to the side to score.

He will be missed.

My condolences to Craig's family.

I am so honored to have known Craig, I came to know Craig my first year of High School and because I am so petite he was the first one to make fun of me, but I turned around and let him know that just because of my height I still should be shown respect and from then on he told everyone, "Anyone who messes with Ana, messes with me" and he would hold my hand as if he was my guardian angel.

After that I saw him I think in 1992, there was a huge mound of snow and he ran to me and jumped over this mound of snow and he said to me, "you know cause you stood up to me I respected you, even though you're tiny, you're big at heart, it's good to see you again". With I asked him for his autograph, and he laughed, I said "someday your name will be remembered and I want to have your name in writing". He gave me a hug and we parted ways, that's the last I saw or heard of him, but I always told people of my freshman experience of him. He will always be in my thoughts and my heart.

Craig "Ironhead" Heyward you will truly be missed, but your name will always be remembered.

what I will remember most is that fateful night under the lights of memorial stadium in West New York when you rushed for 124 yds on 24 carries. We the seniors were amazed that you never played Football before. We all knew a star was born that evening. Also, Funny YOUR IST FOOTBALL CAMP, camp Walpack when you were reminded that you were a rookie and even though we knew you could be a potential" Great One", that did not exclude you from the rookie harrassment you got from Frankie and tyrone causing you to run into the lake to wash off the (heat balm) that they had rubbed on you while you wer sleeping. I remembered that you ran into the lake we didn't knoW if you could even swim... we all paid the next morning with EL'S MARATHON WIND SPRINTS.The laugh the light heartedness will also be remembered. How you played the game and did not take yourself so serious will be remembered. "HEY IRONHEAD!!!! WHAT ABOUT THAT THINGY!!!!!!? REST IN PEACE MY TEAMMATE FOREVER...BIG RED FOR LIFE AND BEYOND..... Somewhere in the silence

We all must cry out

We search for an answer

An end to the doubt

We have many questions

Again and again we ask why

Our painful goodbye

Why on the other hand

Can’t we accept it as part

Of an end to they’re suffering

From their pain they must part

Their lesson are over

To an end they have come

For us left behind

New lessons begun

Life is a series

Of lessons for us

In spite of the struggle

In GOD please do trust

For he is the teacher

And your life is his class

Learn from each moment

Or the lesson will last

As we all get stronger

The lessons adjust

Struggles in life to grow is a must

If you’ve come to a point

Where the lessons have ended

You’re no longer growing

In short you are stranded

So if today is a struggle

Be thankful to GOD

He has faith you can make it

So smile and move on

You can take what he gives you

It’s never too much

Always there to assist you

Through prayer keep in touch

My message is simple

Live life and enjoy

Learn from your living

Know the source of your joy

To GOD be the glory

First he should be

Have faith in the bad times

The good times you’ll see

He never ceased to amaze me how he always managed to get whatever he wanted out of Al from A&E Sports Center; free reign of his car and penthouse. We had a ball joyriding throughout Bergen & Passaic Counties. We reconnected in Atlanta some years later and he had blossomed into a mature husband & father. Thanks for the memories Iron and Al.

i had my moments thinking about the good times i have shared with Iron. How he was the last person to cut my hair. maybe that's why i have none now. just good thoughts. i called him in february for golf advice and he said, Mert, i cant walk right now but i will. keep your eye on the ball. iron also stretched my shoes for me in high school when they were too tight. that is how i remember him.

Truly saddened by the news.Lets see.... I remember that 1st game against Memorial N.Y., it was Iron`s comming out party ,he celebrated his 14th B-day by scoring 2. I remember practical jokes up at camp,I could go old school, and talk about the times our street played thiers at "buccaneer stadium". O`yea, I was at that little league game where his uniform didn`t fit,and guys were bouncing off him like pins at a bowling alley,I remember the Clifton game when Iron touched that punt which helped them get thier only points (we still won 20-3).Speaking of 3, who could forget that Montclair game when he kicked a FG in a 3-2 game.Remember him and Tyrone Stowe in the back field,or him and Nate at Pitt.Remember that Nationaly telivised game against Miami Hurricanes when Iron hurddled a defender and went on to rush for over 200.I still think he should have won that Heisman.

I am honored to have been a teammate and friend. We had fun and we won, but he filled the stands and carried the city on his back.He will forever be a giant in our history as well as our memories.

My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

To The Heyward Family:

I would like to send my sympathies to the Heyward Family Craig Jr., Cameron, Corey, and Connor. I had the great pleasure of knowing Ironhead for my whole life. Since attending school in South Carolina I have been spending the past 3 years of Thanksgiving and other Holidays with Craig and his family. This year is my last year of school and it would have been another year I would have spent with Ironhead and his family. I will cherish every moment I have spent with Ironhead. No matter what I will still be in Duluth, GA for Thanksgiving because that was one thing that I promised him no matter where I am at in this world I will always be there. He was a loving, caring, and love to play around guy. He loved to listean to his music and drive around to show us around Duluth and Atlana. To his sons they are like brothers to me stay strong for each other, and live on your father's legacy. He is surely watching over you. God Bless and God Speed.

I met Craig at Rutgers, New Brunswick in the summer of 84. I was at softball camp, he was playing football for the North/South. We soon discovered that we lived one town away from each other. I would visit him often at the sports store on Main Ave. The guys I hung out with used to watch him play at the stadium, he was unstoppable. They cringed if they had to go up against him on the field. Luckily for them, Wallington rarely played Passaic. They never believed that I started a frienship with Iron, until he stopped at the basketball courts in Wallington one night to say hello. From that day on, they never doubted me. He was a great guy with a great sense of humor. My deepest sympathy goes out to Craig's family. Rest In Peace, you truly are a LEGEND!

I went to school with Ironhead, I graduated with him, GO class of 84. I remember the first time I met Craig, I was scared, he told me not to be afraid of him, I was new in the states & didnt know many people or even the language, he & his brothers made me feel welcomed, we became good friends, after that I couldnt get enough between his brothers Paul, Steven & Ironhead they followed me everywhere & made sure that nobody bothered me. I'm not a sports fan but I tried to follow his career, everytime his name was mentioned I was proud to say I knew him not because of his fame but because of what he did for me & my sisters. The Heyward brothers were our protectors nobody bothered with us because they had to go through the Heyward brothers first. I was visiting Passaic last summer & ran into Steve & after all these years he still remembered me. May Craig "Ironhead" Heyward rest in peace. You will not be forgotten, you will always be in our hearts. God bless you & your love ones. To the Heyward family hang in there.

Parties at Passaic High School, hanging out late night in the parking lot at Mc Donalds and Saturday mornings shivering in the stands at the games. All these things make me remember what it was like being friends with Iron. Childhood only last for a small time but the memories of the friends we are blessed with along the way last a life time. I thank God my memories run long. Craig made a small city in Norther NJ very LARGE and because of that all of our memories of him will forever run deep. May God bless him and keep him in his memory.

Covering the glorious Ironhead era at Passaic High, my alma mater, was truly among the highlights of my career as a sportswriter. Craig brought an energy and enthusiasm not only to the football field but to an entire town, which was filled with pride over his achievements and those of the Indians. Talking with Craig, and Nate, always made my job easier because of their insights and wit. I am greatly saddened by Craig's untimely loss, but his family should know how he inspired a team and a town, and that without doubt he was one of the greatest high school football players in New Jersey history. RIP.
