David Thaxton Obituary

David A. Thaxton, 46, beloved father, son, brother and friend died May 5 at Northside Hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was a resident of Buford, GA for 14 years. He was born May 2, 1961 in New Orleans, LA, and in 1963 his family moved to Asheville, NC. He graduated from A. C. Reynolds High School in 1979 and continued his education at Western Carolina University, where he received a Degree in Computer Science. His career began in Charlotte, NC with Digital Equipment Corp. and continued with Compaq Corp. and eventually Hewlett Packard as a software specialist. He enjoyed a long and committed career in computer support service. David was accustomed to making strong commitments to his family, friends and employers. He was an avid athlete who enjoyed a good hike, especially in the mountains of western North Carolina. In high school, he played quarterback for the football team and was voted MVP in his senior season. He also enjoyed wind surfing, golfing and especially tennis and was on the USTA State Championship Team in 2002. David was also the dedicated scout leader for Webelos Den 545 up to his death. Those left to cherish his memory are: his loving Son, Nicholas of Buford, GA; Mother, Betty J. Thaxton of Asheville, NC; brothers, Tommy (Carolyn) Thaxton of Cumming, GA, Christopher Thaxton and Michael (Yulya) Thaxton, both of Asheville, NC; Uncle Don and Aunt Tillie Stout of Menomonee Falls, WI; Aunt Shirley and Uncle Norb Stich of Menomonee Falls, WI; Aunt Laura Mitchell of Burlington, NC; many Cousins, Nieces, Nephews, and his Best Friends, Jim Fillers and Lee Bowles; also his three companion Dachshunds, Angel, Charlotte and Roger. A memorial service is scheduled at Buford Presbyterian Church on May 12th at 11 AM. Burial will take place on May 19 at the Thaxton-Barnwell Cemetery in Prospect Hill, NC. David was a health-conscious non-smoker. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, concerned family and friends make a contribution to the American Lung Cancer Society for research in finding a cure for lung cancer. He was loved so dearly and his kindness, love, and thoughtfulness will be missed by family and friends. He is gone from our sight but forever in our hearts and memories. Arrangements by Junior E. Flanigan of Flanigan Funeral Home and Crematory, Buford, GA, 770-932-1133, www.flaniganfuneralhome.com.

David was a guy I knew thru my association with ALTA and U.S.T.A tennis teams. We played some great matches together as doubles partners. I always appreciated his competetive spirit and his sportsmanship. David was a man that had a constant positive outlook on life and on people. He was a pleasure to be around. I have been blessed to have David Thaxton as my friend. He will be missed by all of his TENNIS BUDDIES.
