Phyllis Grizzle passed on July 9, 2023. She was born on June 21, 1934 in Pelham, Georgia and grew up on the family farm in the nearby community of Cotton, Georgia. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Berry College and then moved to Sugar Hill, Georgia to start a career as a home economics teacher. After arriving in Sugar Hill, Phyllis met Louie Grizzle and they soon began a marriage of 66 years. Phyllis and Louie had a joyous and full life together and she missed him very much after his passing on December 30, 2022.
Phyllis loved her large and wonderful family - she was one of 11 children born to her parents, Percy and Sarah Curles. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters - Ellen, Catherine, Hilda, Jennie, Margaret, Mary and Myra - and her brothers - Percy and Jerry. Phyllis is survived by her sister, Glenda, who remained in close contact with her throughout her life.
Phyllis adored her immediate family and is survived by her son, Chip Grizzle, and his wife, Martha, and her grandchildren, Charlie Grizzle and his wife, Sarah, John Grizzle and his wife, Mary Pat, and Mary Martha Grizzle and by her great granddaughter, Patti Grizzle.
Phyllis was a gifted teacher, a passion for her that began when she started giving school lessons to her dolls as a young girl. She received Masters and Specialist degrees in Education from the University of Georgia and taught in the Buford City and Gwinnett County School systems for 30 years. As a home economics teacher, she pioneered a course called "Bachelor Living" where she taught teenage boys to cook, clean and manage a household.
Phyllis and Louie were life long members of Sugar Hill Baptist Church, where they had many close relationships and served the church in every capacity. Phyllis continued teaching a Bible study at the church until she and Louie moved to Alabama in their latter years to be near their son and his family. Louie and Phyllis were particularly devoted to a ministry they started at the church in 2001, called the "Brownie Brigade", which involved personal visits to all new residents to the Sugar Hill community with an invitation to visit the church and a gift of homemade brownies. During the nearly 20 years that Louie and Phyllis worked in the brownie ministry, Phyllis baked, and Louie and other church members delivered to new residents of Sugar Hill, over 27,000 boxes of brownies.
Phyllis was a great cook and seamstress, often making clothes for herself and prom and pageant dresses for her many nieces. She loved family events with her many nieces and nephews, and also enjoyed her many friends and their travels together and her regular bridge club of over 50 years. Phyllis was a loving mother and grandmother and delighted in their many family trips and holiday gatherings. Most of all, Phyllis and Louie loved the Lord and lived a life of faith that was a tremendous example to their family and others who knew them well. Phyllis will be missed, but the many wonderful memories she created with her family will be a source of inspiration and joy to them forever.
The family would also like to share its' appreciation and admiration for the fantastic people who live and work at the Regency Pointe assisted living facility in Rainbow City, Alabama. The professional care and sincere compassion extended to Phyllis and Louie in their latter years was amazing and served as a blessing that enriched and sustained them. There are no finer people anywhere and they will always be remembered with gratitude.
Celebration of Life services for Phyllis will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Sugar Hill Church with Pastor Chuck Allen officiating. A time of fellowship will be held following with a meal at the church. Burial will be held privately at Sugar Hill Cemetery.
