Albert KETTLEWELL Obituary

News Death Notice

KETTLEWELL, Albert Wallace 85, of Oxford, Ohio, passed away on January 4, 2013. He was born on September 23, 1927 in Powhatan Point, Ohio, to Robert and Neva (Caldwell) Kettlewell. Al spent his early years in Powhatan Point. Some of his favorite childhood stories were about growing up with his brothers and sisters on the family dairy farm and driving the milk truck to school after delivering early morning bottles of milk. A U.S. Navy veteran, he received his bachelor's degree from Miami University in 1950, his master's degree in 1955, and his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership in 1973. His career in education spanned the titles of teacher, principal and superintendent. He served as the Assistant Dean of the School of Education and Allied Professions at Miami University from 1967 to 1986, acting as Director of the Career Planning and Placement Office. Throughout his professional life, Al was a valued member of the Ohio School Boards Association and served as regional secretary for 26 years. In both his professional and personal life, Al will be fondly remembered as a teacher and mentor. He enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing and telling fishing tales, but most importantly he valued spending time with his family and friends. Holding his memory dear are many friends and family members including his daughters and much loved son-in-laws Cindy Kettlewell (Tosh Augspurger) of Hamilton, Ohio; Susan Kettlewell Fay (Donald Fay) of West Chester, Ohio; and Allison Kettlewell (David Sherman) of Brooklyn, New York. Cherished grandchildren include Albert Ryan and Rachel Fay, Piper Augspurger, and Cydney and Dylan Sherman. He is also survived by lifelong friend Sylvia (Vineyard) Kettlewell of Oxford, Ohio. His children have chosen to honor him with an open memorial service on Saturday, February 16, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sesquicentennial Chapel on the campus of Miami University. Friends may greet the family at a drop-in reception at the Shriver Center from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. to celebrate the life of a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, educator and friend. The family requests memorial contributions be made to one of the following: The Miami University Al Kettlewell Scholarship Fund at www.forloveandhonor.org or mail to Miami University, 725 E. Chestnut St. Oxford, Ohio 45056; or to The National Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org in memory of Al Kettlewell or mail to National Kidney Foundation, Finance Department, 30 E. 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016 (Al Kettlewell, 2689 Darrtown Rd., Hamilton, Ohio 45013) The Ogle & Paul R. I will never forget Al. He was a true friend to MU students. If one of the students that I was advising student one needed one more course to graduate or wanted to waive a course, Al would get the course waived. He had a lot of power and would pull strings so that students could graduate. This was old Miami and does not happen today.

On behalf of my father, James R. Showkeir, I want to express condolences to the family. Al and dad were great friends for over 40 years. They enjoyed each others company and had deep mutual respect personally and professionally. Al is missed by all who knew him. I, too, was very fond of Al and through dad got to know him well. He was a fine man. May he rest in peace.
