I may have said this earlier: Michael (known as Mick) came to the Naval Academy as a football recruit. He was soft spoken and a true gentleman and yet a natural leader: a perfect candidate for USNA. Plebe (freshman) year was tough, stressful and tempers flared but Mick handled in a calm stride. The succeeding years there were the same for Mick; not many could say the same.

First Class (senior) year was a bit less stressful as we concentrated on graduating. One of the subdivisions at USNA was a company which consisted of about 120 midshipmen (all young men as it was before lady midshipmen were brought in). For the last semester as I recall, he was named company commander and I was named his number 2. It was then that I really had cause to admire him. For that period we became roommates: kind of an odd couple; the cool and calm mid from a small town in Ohio and me, the clumsy bumbling kid from Waco Texas. Duties, studies, more liberty with his fiancée nearby in our final trimester didn’t leave much time to hangout but it was enough to realize what a special man that he was. He made this world a better place and I believe he’s now in some sort of heavenly leadership role.

I didn't know Mick very well, but was aware of his prowess on the football field. As a Naval Academy classmate I was saddened to learn of his passing and will remember him and his family in my prayers.

Our hearts go out to Connie and his family.

Mick was a “big brother” to many of his US Naval Academy classmates. He was the one “brother” that we always looked up to – a quiet unassuming man who eventually married his high school sweetheart. He was blessed with athletic gifts, intelligence and a charismatic leadership quality that caused us to gather around him and lean on him. We will miss him. We are all better men for having known him.
