Robert Bogan Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

BOGAN, Robert W. Of Oxford, formerly of Hamilton, passed away on Sunday morning, April 29, 2007 at the Knolls of Oxford. He was born in Clinton County, the son of LeRoy and Nina (Probasco) on February 23, 1913. He graduated from Wilmington College in 1934, received his Masters Degree from University of Cincinnati and took additional graduate courses at the Ohio State University. He taught mathematics and social studies in Highland County and Sycamore High School in Hamilton County. In 1939 he married Mary Louise Murrell and they moved to Hamilton where he taught at Fairfield High School. In 1942 he was appointed principal of Hanover High School. In 1948 he became principal of Stewart High School within the Oxford Public School District and in 1953 was named superintendent of the newly consolidated Talawanda School District and served until his retirement in 1969. While superintendent he taught classes in the Miami University summer school sessions. Bob was appointed Butler County administrator in the Commissioners' Office where he served 10 years. A new jail, administration building, human services department and county home were constructed during that decade. He spent two years with the Oxford Chamber of Commerce when it reorganized in 1979, served eight years on the McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital Board and served two years as president, was an Elder in the Oxford Presbyterian Church, president of the Presbyterian Men's Club and sang in the choir, and also was the speaker at the Hopewell Church opening session for a number of years. He was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers' Board of Trustees for eight years and served as legislative agent for the local A.A.R.P. and Retired Teacher's group, served as secretary of the Oxford Rotary Club for a period of ten years, was president of the Wilmington College Alumni Association and was honored by the college with a special citation. His most treasured honor came recently with the opening of the Robert W. Bogan Elementary School within the Talawanda School District. In light of this, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Bogan Elementary School, 131 W. Chestnut St., Oxford, OH 45056. During his college years and later in his adult life he participated in various musical groups, golf and bridge. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years Mary Louise of Oxford, with whom he was able to enjoy traveling extensively; and a son Robert M. Bogan and daughter-in-law Sharon. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Ruth Anna Crawford. Funeral services will be held at 11:00a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at the Oxford Presbyterian Church, 101 N. Main St., Oxford, with visitation beginning at 9:00a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in the Oxford Cemetery. The Smith & Ogle Funeral Home is assisting the family.

My memories of Mr. Bogan begin with him singing with my parents in the U Presby Church choir. When I was too young to leave home alone, my parents took me with them to choir practice. I remember Mr. Bogan's signature smile and his encouragement to work hard on my homework while Mr. Moore led the choir in rehearsal. Always being the educator, Mr. Bogan would pat my shoulder and ask how my studies were coming. He made time for small acts that will be remembered. Those of us who knew him are blessed.

Dear Bob and family,
My deepest condolence to you all. I have always thought highlly of your parents and was sadden when Michael emailed me about your dad's passing. Your parents encouragement was one reason I pursued a degree in education from Miami after graduating from Talawanda in 1966.

I have such fond memories of Mr. Bogan. He was my parents' principal at Hanover and served as the superintendent from the time I entered school at Hanover in '55 until I graduated from Talawanda in '66. I saw him several times after I became an adult and he was so excited that I had become a teacher, a principal and later a superintendent. I am sure my knowledge of him as a child influenced my career choices later. I always viewed him as a leader and admired him greatly. His life was certainly one of service to individuals and the community.

I knew Bob when he was County Administrator. I served as Supt. of the Butler Juvenile Center. Bob was an understanding and honorable man. May God take care of him now.

Dear Bob and Sharon,
I am unable to come to Oxford Thursday to pay my respects in person, so I am sending this note. I was sorry to read of your father's death. He was a good and kind man. I remember him best from his working with the county commissioners. It is hard to lose a parent, no matter what age; we were lucky to have had ours for such a long time. May it be of comfort to you to know that I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to the family of Robert Bogan. My daughter, Ashley is a first grader at Bogan Elementary and she was always so excited when Mr. & Mrs. Bogan came to visit. The beautiful new Bogan Elementary was named after a wonderful man, and we keep the Bogan Family in our thoughts and prayers.
