I met Vinny at Fairview High School when we were members of the Wrestling Team. Vinny always made me laugh and was a good friend. I thought he was so cool, I even tried to emulate his athletic walk (those of you who knew him well know what I mean).
We stayed friends through High School and I always looked forward to visiting with him during the High School Reunions.
In 2006 Vinny came to San Diego for a visit. We played golf, fished on the lake and ocean, hiked, ate a lot, gambled. went to dinner with my girlfriend, played guitar, drank, laughed a lot! When we played golf Vinny hit a rabbit on the golf green with his chip shot. Hit him in the butt, didn't hurt him. We laughed because he said he had hit a lot of "birdies," but this was his first "rabbit." Then, while on the lake he cast out his bait and caught a duck around the leg. We had a good laugh when we reeled it in and untangled it.
One of the main reasons Vinny came to California was to go the the Tonight Show. He said he had always wanted to do that. He got tickets somehow and we did go. It was great fun! What an experience.
Vinny was a really good friend to me. He surprised my at the last reunion by unexpectedly meeting me at the airport. After taking my stuff to the motel, Vinny took me out for a great dinner and we spent the evening in one of his favorite "hangouts."
I am very sad to hear of his passing.
I remember him telling me a few years ago that his grandchildren were so important to him that he quit smoking! I really respected him for that.
Here's a funny story: When Vinny came to visit in 2006 he asked me how the weather was in San Diego. I explained that it was warm during the day and could become cool in the evening. I didn't think any more about that. It just so-happened that we had unseasonably high temperatures during his visit. The night we went to dinner with my girlfriend I just looked into the guest bedroom and noted that the bed was made and obviously had not be turned down. I asked Vinny about that at dinner and he explained that he always brought his own sheets when he traveled because he was afraid of bed bugs. I asked, "Vinny, why don't you go ahead and put your sheets on the bed?" He answered, "Well, I brought flannel sheets!" I though Sandy, my girlfriend, would slip under the table we were all laughing so hard.
Another thing Vinny did that meant a lot to me was call me on my birthday. He often did this during a Fairview High School Summer Party. He would pass the phone around to my classmates and we would say hello. It was a very thoughtful thing to do.
This year Vinny did call me on my birthday as usual. And I was looking forward to calling him on his birthday, but, unfortunately I will never have that pleasure again.
Vinny, Buddy, wherever you are be assured that I will miss you and never forget your sweet, gentle nature and kindnesses. I am lucky to have been your friend.
Please note that I have a great set of pictures from his visit and will be happy to send a disc of them to you if you contact me.
