Patrick Settoon Obituary

Patrick Delano Settoon, age 91, passed from this life on Thursday, March 13, 2025, to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A long-time resident of Hammond, LA, Dr. Settoon was born in Amite on February 15, 1934, to Dudley and Ethel Temple Settoon. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 68 years, a loving father to his children, an enthusiastic grandfather and great-grandfather, and a good friend to many. He will be lovingly remembered and tremendously missed by his wife Barbara Beaty Settoon; son Rick Settoon; daughter-in-law Cheryl Settoon; son Randy Settoon and wife Susan; daughter Noelle Settoon Moschitta and husband Benny. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Joshua Settoon; Elisha Settoon and wife Stephanie; Holly Settoon; Jourdan Settoon Van Vrancken and husband C.J.; Anna Vaughan Whitten; Parker Vaughan; and Caroline Vaughan Hernandez as well as great-grandchildren Tristan and Tatum Whitten, Isaac Hernandez, and Zane Settoon.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Settoon was preceded in death by his infant daughter Terry Ethelyn Settoon; siblings Marguerite Radovich, Dudley Settoon Jr, Bernice Jackson and Durno Settoon; and son-in-law John S. Vaughan.

A graduate of Amite High School, Dr. Settoon received his BS degree in Chemistry and MS degree in Biochemistry from Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) and earned his PhD in Food Science and Technology from Louisiana State University. He began his professional career in 1957 at Union Carbide Corporation as a special problems chemist. In 1958 he returned to SLU as a chemistry instructor and rose to the academic rank of full professor. His career continued administratively in 1969 with his appointment as Head of the Department of Chemistry and Physics followed by Dean of the College of Science and Technology in 1980, and culminating with Provost and Vice-President for Academic and Student Affairs in 1986. He retired in 1990 as Provost emeritus, was appointed as Scholar-in-Residence and continued to teach part-time. A consultant in water and wastewater treatment for local municipalities, he established and managed the City of Hammond's water and wastewater laboratory. Dr. Settoon was an active member of Calvary Christian Center and selflessly gave of his time and leadership talent in civic and community service throughout his life, having served as Hammond Chamber of Commerce President; Hammond Kiwanis Club President; Southeastern Development Foundation Chairman; Tangipahoa Parish United Way Chairman; SLU Alumni Association Vice-President; Dixie Youth Baseball Commissioner; North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital Board Chairman; Louisiana State PTA Vice-President; and Hammond's First Charter Commission Vice-Chairman. He received numerous honors including Louisiana Outstanding Young Man in 1969-70 awarded by the Louisiana Junior Chamber of Commerce; Outstanding Citizen Award for 1971 awarded by the Hammond Kiwanis Club; Tangipahoa Parish Outstanding Male for 1976 awarded by the Hammond Junior Auxiliary; and in the 2008 Hammond City Council naming of Hammond's mini league baseball field as "Settoon Field," with the dedication sign now displayed at Reimers Baseball Field in Zemurray Park.

Our family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff of The Phoenix Senior Living Community Center and Southern Grace Hospice for their outstanding, compassionate and loving care of our beloved dad.

Visitation will be at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home in Hammond on Saturday, March 22, 2025, beginning at 11:00 a.m. until services at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow in Rose Memorial Cemetery. As a kid, living in the same neighborhood, I have nothing but fond memories of their family. Attending SLU, Dr. Pat Settoon after 40 years taking his chemistry classes, my memory has retained the majority of them. Fantastic professor!! Thanks to you as well as Randy... Both of you gave out great motivation and encouragement attending SLU. Dr Pat Settoon will be dearly missed.

I was a freshman at SLC in 1958. Pat Settoon was my chemistry lab instructor. He as a good teacher and a "prince of a fellow". I never forgot him.
