Emily Gomes Obituary

Emily Gomes was born to Manuel and Anna Mello on April 3, 1921 in Riverdale, CA. She passed away at age 91 on August 20th at a Hanford hospital. She was a beloved Mother to 5 daughters and "Va-Vee" to 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Emily was the youngest of 6 siblings, whose parents emigrated from Terceira, Azores Islands.
Emily liked to spend her time working in her beautiful garden, hosting family gatherings, and enjoyed dancing, music and traveling. She loved to vacation at her beach house in Pismo beach, where she could entertain family and found peaceful relief from the valley heat. She had a great sense of humor and even greater love of her family.
Emily cared deeply for animals of all kinds. She was a 4H Leader, and used her expertise to help her daughters become active members in agriculture.
As I.D.E.S. Lodge Member, Emily was an active participant in her community. She enjoyed socializing and contributing to the future and education of her fellow friends and neighbors. Education was particularly important to Emily; she spent several years of her life as a Teacher's assistant.
Emily was also a member of the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America , the Kings County Cotton Women's Auxiliary, the U.P.P. E. C. and the Sociedade Portugesa Rainha Santa Isabel.
Emily was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be deeply missed by her family, who love her very much.
Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Gomes, and her daughter, Beverly Sevey. She is survived by daughters Helene Righetti (Ken), Sandra Craven (Rodney), Roberta Chambers (John), and Lynette Klein (Leroy). Grandchildren Marc Righetti (Jenny), Stephanie Simas, Ryan Righetti (Andrea), Jason Simas, Kyle Klein, Trish Chambers and Susan Souza. Great-grandchildren Conor, Sophia, Serene, Michael, Derek, Alex, Rachel and Reyna.
Services will be held for immediate family. A Rosary ceremony will be held Friday, August 24th at 6:00 pm at Lady of Fatima Church in Laton.
Funeral services and mass will be held Saturday, August 25th at 9:00 am at Lady of Fatima Church, a graveside service held immediately after at Lemoore Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that a donation in Emily's name be made to Friends of the Kings County Library.
Arrangements under the direction of Whitehurst-McNamara Funeral Service.

Miss my Mom but glad she is no longer suffering. She left us in style & grace

August 25, 2012

A little sandwich and some plain lay's potato chips. Another blanket put on top of you when you were perfectly comfortable already. A little trip to Hanford in the Big Gold Oldsmobile. These are some of the things that I remember. And the rosebush she would us that was planted for Beverly. I believe Vavee's passing is a Mercy from God. I've shed tears over this, but I am grateful in my heart that she no longer will be suffering Alzheimer's. We were able to help her live with this illness and had some very special moments. In 2011, I witnessed her reception of the Sacrament of the Annointing of the Sick. As the priest made the sign of the cross to bless her, she traced his hand movements in the air. She could tell something special was happening and seemed to want it. I miss my grandmother and want her back, but I know it is a better thing that she passed on this week to meet her creator and friend.
