MONA ANACLETO Obituary

MONA SUE DOWDY ANACLETO

August 17, 1939 – June 25, 2024

Passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at home surrounded by her family. Mona was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard "Philip", sons Monty and baby Joseph. She is survived by her children: Frances (Lisa), Tim, Albert (Sherie Bartron) and Sarah (Clint). Many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mona was the youngest of twelve children and is survived by her sister Clay Wallen. Mona was born August 17, 1939, on a small farm in Welty, Oklahoma to Joseph and Bertha (Godwin) Dowdy. At the age of five Mona moved to Armona, Ca. with her family and lived in the area for the remainder of her life.

Mona was a proud homemaker. She always had a garden and would harvest her fruits and vegetables to be canned and put away for the winter months. She would bottle feed the calves and irrigate the pasture before going in to begin her daily household chores. She loved to cook and said she was lucky to have a family who would eat anything she made for them. She and Philip raised five children. As a family they enjoyed camping, fishing, walking on the beach and other outdoor activities. Mona and Philip square danced with the Square Eights. They were active at the Lemoore Senior Center participating in potlucks, bingo, and music. They were members of the California Bluegrass Association. They traveled to numerous Bluegrass festivals throughout the state where they worked as volunteers. Mona loved the gypsy lifestyle, getting to meet people and make new friends. They spent several winters camping in the desert with their Bluegrass friends playing music and sharing stories of their lives. Later in life Mona enjoyed crafting, reading, visiting local casinos, and looking for a good deal at yard sales and thrift stores. Mona loved traveling with family and friends. She traveled to many states in the U.S. to include Alaska and Hawaii. She also traveled to Canada, Mexico, and to England twice. Throughout Mona's life she was a collector of many things, decorative chickens, cookie jars, salt and pepper shakers, succulent plants, and all things sunflower.

Mona loved a good party and any reason to get dressed up. She would ask her caregiver, Diane Sanchez, who she loved and called her friend, to help her pick out an outfit including jewelry and shoes. They would head downstairs at the Remington, where she lived, in search of fun and excitement. She often colored her hair pink or blue just to add a little spice to everyone's life. Mona was born during hard times and even though she came from modest beginnings, she enjoyed giving gifts more than receiving as a way of showing her love and appreciation for others. Mona's thoughtfulness and kindness will be missed but she will never be forgotten.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Diane Sanchez, our mother's caregiver, and friend. We prayed for someone special to come into our lives to help us care for mom and our prayers were answered. We will never forget Diane's loyalty, love, and commitment to our mother.

A special thanks to all the caregivers and staff at the Remington who went out of their way to help mom and make her life better. We will always be grateful to you.

Graveside Service will be held at the Grangeville Cemetery 10428 14th Avenue, Armona, Ca. on July 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow at First Missionary Baptist Church, 10649 Railroad Avenue, Armona, Ca.

Mona and Phil became dear friends when my husband and I were active in the California Bluegrass Association. We had lost track of Mona but thought of her often. I have several cat cookie jars which Mona generously gifted to me, and I think of her every time I look at them. Today I decided to google Mona's name on the chance that she may have passed, and found this obituary. Henry and I send belated condolences to the family. We loved Mona and Phil and will treasure our memories of them.

I enjoyed Mona and Phil so much! They were first my mom, Mildred's friends, and then they were mine. I got to know her better when they volunteered for me at the membership booth for the California Bluegrass Association. I always knew I could count on her. She was witty, funny, warm and caring, and often full of surprises. I can still hear her saying to me, "Now, Carolyn, I have to tell you..." Then I knew something interesting was coming, and I'd sit and listen to her measured words with that lovely Oklahoma twang.
One day at the CBA festival, my kids showed up wearing these beautiful shiny necklaces. I had to look closer. They were made out of candy! Smarties and foil-wrapped caramels had all been tied together with pretty string. "Where did you get those!" "Mona gave them to us." I was so jealous!
Mona had a flair for fashion. She would wear the unisex festival tees that we all did, but hers would have the hem split into strips and strung with pony beads.
Her hospitality was generous and expansive. When she found out that a traveling Bluegrass band of brothers had the same last name as her maiden name, and were from her neck of the woods, she either found out or decided that they were related to her. So she planned out a big dinner at the festival and invited those boys and her friends to join her in treating them and fellowshipping.
I'm grateful I had her friendship and the wonderful memories from those years I was around her. Rest in peace, Mona.

My great aunt Mona was one of my most favorite people. Even though we didn´t get to see each other as often as I would have liked, I always felt so connected to her. I loved her spirit: loving, free and strong. I cherish the time spent together and will think of her always when I see a beautiful field of wild sunflowers.

So many memories. The thing that stands out the most is the way she made me feel. From the first time I met her in my teenage years to the honor of serving her at The Remington. I loved her beautiful smile, her always ready for fun attitude and the look of pride and joy when her family were around. She will be greatly missed. I am happy for her and for heaven. She is going to be an awesome addition to heaven

I´m truely blessed to have had Mona, Phillip in my life. The Anacleto family is a very special family and you could tell Mona and Phillip were very proud of all of the Children. I always enjoyed our coffee/smoke sessions whether we were sitting at the kitchen table or at the coast. Like Barbara said holidays at the Anacleto household, Mona always took great care and made it memorable. The impact this family had on others is heartfelt. I currently go to physical therapy and the therapist looked me and said. Anacleto is not a common name and he asked is this the Armona family and I said yes. He was like oh the memories at the house he was the youngest so they named him Polly Wog or Polly for short. He said always had the best time at the house. He than began to tell me him and the kids were behind the garage and Mona looked out the door and yelled what are you boys up to and they sent Polly out and he said nothing. She didn´t believe them so she sent Sara out to see what they were doing. He also said she always made treats for the kids. Yard selling Mona was the wheel and deal queen. Britt and I moved to Lemoore with very little. Mona furnished half our house. To the family may your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories. Love you always.

My prayers are with Mona´s family. Mona was always the bright light in a room. Her smile and friendliness was so engaging to all. Her legacy will live on through her family and whoever was fortunate to have known her. She was a perfect example of how enjoying people´s company can make the world a better place. We should all follow Mona´s example and celebrate life any chance we get! Much Love, Susan Mahackian
