J. Valdon "Val" Vire, 83, of Hannibal, MO, and formerly of Springfield, MO, Jefferson City, MO, and Bolivar, MO went to be with his savior at 8:56 AM, Monday, September 25, 2023, at his home in Hannibal, MO.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at the First Christian Church in Hannibal, MO. Rev. Doug Job will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hannibal, MO.
Friends and Family are invited to Val's Life Celebration at a visitation that will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, October 2, 2023, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, MO.
Val was born May 21, 1940, in Polk County, near Buffalo, MO, to Jesse M. Vire and Jewell May Butts Vire.
He was married to Pamela Lockard on December 30, 1993. She survives.
Other survivors include his stepchildren, Shelly Selbach (Doug) of Jefferson City, MO, Travis Andrews (Jenny) of Texas, Shane Andrews of Hannibal, and Justin Hull of Hannibal, MO; his brother, Vern Vire (Angie) of Springfield, MO; his niece, Denise Hall (Scott) of Cassville, MO, his nephew, Gerry Vire of North Kansas City, MO; his eight grandchildren, Sarah Moake, Alexaundria Andrews, Zach Andrews (Taylor), Brody Andrews, Shelby Foubester (Phillip), Colton Andrews, Owen Andrews, and Kasen Pryor; two great grandchildren, Ayda Foubester, and Embry Foubester; and many great nieces and nephews.
Val was preceded in death by his parents.
Val was a graduate of Pleasant Hope High School, Missouri State University in Springfield, and University of Missouri in Columbia. He was a past member of the Jaycees, Kiwanis, and Rotary civic organizations.
Professionally, Val retired as Director of the Hannibal Regional Center in 1999 having worked 32 years for the State of Missouri within the Departments of Mental Health and Social Services. During this time, he worked in Mountain Grove, Houston, Macon, Jefferson City, and Hannibal. After retirement, Val worked throughout the state as an investigator and trained foster and adoption parents for Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, IL.
Val loved taking road trips with his wife, Pam. Together, they traveled to Canada, South Dakota, North Carolina, Colorado, and Florida. He enjoyed crappie fishing in Arkansas and Mississippi and being outdoors working in his yard and around the house. Val was known to always have a stash of his favorite candy bars, Twix and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Above all, Val cherished his moments spent with his wife, family, and friends. Val will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Pallbearers will be Scot Wade, Brian Scott, Matt Obert, Alan Obert, Steve Lewton, and Chad Collier.
Honorary pallbearers will be Richie Fogle and Pat Thomas.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church.
