NEW BUFFALO - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James "Jim" Edward Jelinek on September 8, 2024, at the age of 80.
Jim was born on May 10, 1944, into a farming family, where he grew up working alongside his father and uncle (Ernest Jelinek) and later, his brother Tom. His love for the land and farming shaped much of his life. Neighbors long remembered the fields of sunflowers planted and harvested. Although he trained as an educator at Michigan State University, Jim was ultimately called back to the family farm where he dedicated himself to improving farming practices and caring for the land he was so passionate about. Jim's commitment to his community extended beyond farming. He served on the New Buffalo School Board and contributed two decades of service to the State of Michigan Agriculture and Stabilization Service, where he worked to support and strengthen the agricultural community.
Jim was the devoted husband of Teddie (Benjamin) Jelinek for 58 beautiful years. Together, they built a family full of love and joy. Jim was the loving father of Jamie (Frank) Starr, Edward (Damon), and Charles (Joslyn), and the adoring grandfather of Austin, Brady, Walker, Grant, Mint, Joshua, Vivian, Grace, and Mason.
He is also survived by his beloved siblings Nancy (Jim) Reiman, Tom (Marilyn), and Amy (Bob) Grey; in-laws Barbara (Howard) Hickman and Ron Benjamin; and cousins Ron Jelinek, Wendy Martin, and Tony Waldo. Jim's family and friends will forever cherish his memory.
Throughout his life, Jim was known for his strong work ethic, love for the land, love for Oliver tractors and commitment to his community. His legacy of kindness, strength, and generosity will live on through his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family is having a campfire gathering to share memories at the house in the evening of October 12th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Activity Fund of West Woods of Bridgman Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
