Albert Lay Obituary
KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Albert Lay, Jr., 89, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Indian Path Medical Center. Born In Harlan, KY, he was the son of the late Albert Sr. and Stella Rose Lay.
Albert served his country as a Navy Seal from 1944-1947 in the Underwater Demolition Division. He was also present when Japan surrendered. He was a member of the VFW, Elk Lodge, UCT, Bloomingdale Ruitan, and Lynn Garden Baptist Church for over 50 years. Albert was the manager of many local Minute Market Stores. He was a Tennessee and Kentucky Colonel.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Sadie "Dean" Lay; three sisters, Jessie McSpadden, Aretta Whitaker, and Jannette McArthur and two brothers, Harold and Glenn Lay.
Albert is survived by his two daughters, Mary Calhoun and husband Gary, Becky Hurlock and husband Rickey; two sisters, Bobbie Martin and Norma Clawson; six grandchildren, Angie Sybert and husband Ray, Sabrina Gillenwater and husband Jamie, Chris Hooker (Bethany), Candy Hooker, Sabrina Hurlock and Amber Hurlock; nine great grandchildren, Rusty, Mariah, Jacob, Alyssa, Kendra, Jahvonna, Tyler, Brayden, Xander; sister-in-law, Pat Densel and husband Chuck; several nieces and nephews; and a host of special friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Pastor Rick Meade and to the nurses and staff of the fifth floor at Indian Path Medical Center.
The family will receive friends, Friday, 5-7:00pm at Lynn Garden Baptist Church. Services will immediately follow at 7pm with Pastors Gary Calhoun and Carl Strickler officiating. A graveside service will be held Saturday, 2pm at East Lawn Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the American Legion post 3/265.
Pallbearers will be, Rusty Gillenwater, Jacob Gillenwater, Jamie Gillenwater, Chris Hooker, Jay Whitaker, Jamie Clawson, and Ray Sybert.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Alvie Bright, Jack Mays, and Paul Bowman. Online condolences for the family may be made at www.cartertrent.com
