She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She had a lifelong work ethic, including helping husband Jim as the owner-operator of Hurricane River Cave, administration at North Arkansas College (NACC) from 1978 to 1989, and spent her retirement years as a substitute teacher at Eagle Heights Elementary and working as an assistant at Edward Jones.
Johnie was born in Harrison in 1944, the daughter of Johnie W. Melton of Pyatt and her mother, Billie McGinnis, of Batesville.
Johnie is survived by her brother, Louis Melton and wife Julie; her sister, Betty Scott and husband Jim; her sons, John Lowery and wife Heather, and Erick Schermerhorn and wife Amber; her stepson, Jimmy Schermerhorn and wife Ashley; stepdaughter, Michele McGarrah; granddaughters, Megan Lowery and Ashton, Addison, and Emma Schermerhorn; her beloved nephews and nieces, John Paul Melton, Amanda Peterson, Emily Swett, Liz Sigfridson, and Megan Hovis; her brothers-in-law, Ed (Kay), David (Wendy), and Richard (Susan) Schermerhorn and Gaylon (Jan) Lowery; and her sister-in-law, LeEtta (John) East; and many nephews and nieces and their children.
Johnie had so many friends and family who were a blessing in her life, but the family would like to thank Marilyn Mathis, Barbara Bell, Ernie Young, Billye Lawrence, and Fred and Andrea Spry for all the help and support these last few years.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or your preferred cancer research center.
