Aaron Olmsted Obituary

OLMSTED, Lt. Col. Aaron "Tim" G. Jr. (USAF, Ret.) Retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Aaron "Tim" G. Olmsted, Jr., 60, of Ellington, beloved husband for 32 years of Diane (Kenyon) Olmsted, died suddenly on May 13, 2011 in Pennsylvania. Born in Hartford on December 19, 1950, son of the late Aaron Goodwin Olmsted, Sr. and Barbara (Deane) Olmsted, he had spent most of his life in Ellington. After graduating from high school, Tim enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a helicopter pilot serving during the Vietnam era. Upon his discharge, he then transferred to the U.S. Air Force, where he attended pilot training and began a long career in aviation. A distinguished veteran, Tim served in Desert Storm, Desert Shield, and during conflicts in Grenada, Panama, and Somalia. During his tours, Tim flew C-123's, C-130's, and C-5's. He was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster and multiple Air Medals. Tim was honorably discharged as Lieutenant Colonel after serving his country for many years in the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and in the U.S Air Force Reserves. Having followed in his father's footsteps, he was a distinguished pilot, an avid skier, a dedicated man to his community and an asset to the world of aviation. Tim received his pilot's license on his sixteenth birthday and during his career he earned almost every pilot rating possible and logged over 12,000 hours of flying. In addition to his military experience, Tim was a graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University and worked in many different capacities for the government and in the private sector. He was a member of the civil air patrol and he also served as a corporate jet pilot for U.S. Presidents, kings and queens and other politicians and dignitaries. He was a member of Ye Ancient and Secret Society of the Quiet Birdman, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. A member of the National Ski Patrol, Tim worked at Blandford Ski Area in Blandford, MA and he was an ambassador at Mount Snow in Vermont. He was very involved in the community, serving as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop #96, BSA, as a member and past president of the Exchange Club of Rockville, and as a member of the Economic Development Committee in Ellington. Most of all Tim will be remembered for his passions in life; his family, his five grandsons, his dogs of past and present, flying, skiing, and his 1967 Chrysler Newport Convertible. Besides his wife, he leaves his children, Kimberly and Jennifer Sisk of West Hartford, Jennifer Reckert and her husband Robert of Ellington, and Aaron G. Olmsted of South Windsor; a brother, Deane Olmsted and his wife Gail of Longmeadow, MA; two sisters, Ann Melbourn and her husband Thomas of Coeur d'Alene, ID and Carolyn LaValley and her husband Bernard of Suffield; five grandsons, Aaron, Gabe, and Weston Sisk, and Ian and Nathan Reckert; and seven nieces and nephews. His family will receive friends on Thursday, May 19, 4-7 p.m., with a service of remembrances at 7 p.m., at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road, Vernon. A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Friday, May 20, 11 a.m., at Ellington Center Cemetery, Ellington. Tim's family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Aaron "Tim" Olmsted Scholarship Fund, c/o Rockville Bank, 12 Main St., Ellington, CT 06029. To the Family of Aaron Olmstead:
Our family was visiting relatives in Benezette on May 13th, our month old grandaughter's first trip. The sun was shining and the day was beautiful in this rural area where the wild elk roam the fields. The serenity and peace of this area is always a comfort to me. I feel it is important for you to know that your husband/father's death impacted all those that witnessed the accident. Many of the residents went into action, calling 911, mounting their quads to find the plane and rushing to the site to offer medical assistance. My twenty-nine year old son, a corrections officer with some medical training was one of the first to arrive on the scene after those gentlemen on the quads had located the plane. Those witnessing this accident were willing to do anything to assist the unknown pilot. Their compassion and humanity was truly something to witness and I hope you may find comfort in that. Even before the identification, impressive credentials and service of this man were known, the mourning of those in the area is difficult to describe in words. Please accept our deepest sympathy and gratitude for his many years of service to our country. We will never visit the area without remembering his fateful day and what a wonderful human being he must have been. May he rest in peace.

What sad news - although I did not know Tim well, it was a pleasure working with him (via email and phone) plus we did meet up when he visited the Barings office in London a few years ago. A genuinely nice man...

May 20, 2011

Diane, Aaron and Family,

Susan and I want to express our deepest sympathy to each of you. What started many years ago to help our children through involvement with scouts and baseball, where I met Tim, became a wonderful relationship for our families, with the community of Ellington and community service. I will always remember the great times and events, ie. taking them to see the C-5's he flew at Westover, the Rescue squad, Den leading, coaching baseball, working on the Public Safety Commission with Tim and on. We will also remember the great times playing board games at each others homes.

I always appreciated Tim's genuine passion for life, aviation, scouts and giving back to his community and country. We want to thank him for his dedicated service (and all those who serve) and your support of Tim to do all this for our community and country to make our world a better place. I know the Lord is welcoming Tim back truly as a good and faithful servant. We will miss him. God Bless each of you as you Celebrate Tim's wonderful life today. You're in our Thoughts and Prayers.

Diane and Family,

We join with so many others who knew Tim in offering our deepest sympathy. He was more than just a friend to us but a cherished member of our ski patrol family.

He was always kind and considerate with our patients and was always looking for a little mischief when things were quiet.

His passing will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of everyone who knew and had the privilege to work with him. Tim’s memory is held deep within our hearts and I believe he would want us to remember how happy he was and how fun he was to be around.

On behalf of the entire Blandford Ski Patrol family, our sincere thoughts and prayers are with you.

With deepest sympathy,
Russ Sweeny

Diane and Family,
Our deepest sympathy to all of you. We had both the pleasure and the honor to know Tim as a friend while we lived in Ellington. He was a wonderful person. We have so many good memories of times with him - playing cards, scouting, getting a tour of a C-5 cockpit, watching him drive his Chrysler in the town parades. He lived life to the fullest and we, along with our sons, were all blessed to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I only knew Tim for a short time through our membership in The Quiet Birdmen. His spirit was contagious. Membership in QB is limited to the most distinguished pilots and I am amazed they let a guy like me join their ranks when true heroes like Tim honor our membership ranks. I am better for having known him - even briefly.

Dear Diane,

I'm very sorry to hear about Tim's unfortunate accident and untimely passing. I worked with Tim at the Bradley FSDO for my first three years on the FAA. He was an outstanding teacher and mentor and a lot of fun to work with. A real live aviator who could fly whatever they brought to the office. God bless you and your family, we will miss Tim dearly. May he rest in peace.

With kindest regards,
Bill Wicks

Mrs. Olmstead and family, I was so very sad to hear about the loss of Tim. I was fortunate to serve with him on the EDC for many years and in that time came to respect and admire him greatly. His zest for life and relentless search for "the right thing to do" were just 2 of his wonderful qualities. I hope you will take some measure of comfort in knowing how many lives he touched in a positive manner. I wish you God's peace and comfort, Laura Sherman
