Alan Fein Obituary

Dr. Alan Fein, 81 of Simsbury Connecticut, beloved husband of Marlene Leiner Fein, passed away peacefully at home on May 1, 2023 after a courageous battle with illness. Alan was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and spent his career studying Neurophysiology. He received a B.S. in electrical engineering from City College of New York, a master's from Columbia University and PHD's from Johns Hopkins Medical and Engineering schools simultaneously.

His internationally renowned research interest was photoreceptors, and the causes, perception and therapy of pain. His book, "Nocioceptors and the perception of pain" can be read online.

He supported and mentored generations of medical students and scientists at the University of Connecticut and the Marine Biology Laboratory at Woods Hole Massachusetts. He also was a significant mentor to his children and grandchildren and followed their educations passionately. Aside from his wife Marlene, Alan leaves behind his children Laura Fein, Rachel Fein and Claire Fein, his beloved grandchildren Jordan, Sophie, Ethan, Jake and Sammy.

Friends and family may call on the Fein family on Wednesday and Thursday from 5pm to 8pm and Sunday from 1pm to 3pm at 25 Canaan Way West Simsbury. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Dana Farber institute, Dana-farber.org in gratitude for the excellent care he received there.

To Marlene and the daughters,
I was deeply saddened by Alan's death. I worked in Alan's lab in Woods Hole during several visits and also collaborated with him during your stay in Jerusalem. He was an outstanding scientist, and a great collaborator. I learned so much from him - how to do an experiment efficiently, how to analyze data and to prepare them for publication. Over the years he wrote to me about his illness. He mentioned the ordeal with the treatments, but without complaints and with no self-pity. I'll greatly miss him.

Marlene, Rachel, Laura, Claire, These are times when words are asked to take the place of tears. If only I could write tears. Alan was an incredible and beautiful man. Brilliant and with a wit. But more than that, he was a husband and father. His success is even more profound because yes, his memory IS for a blessing because of who each of you are and what you choose to do. May blessings, love, and happiness always be yours.
