Alan Kosloff Obituary

On Sunday March 7, 2021, Alan Marshall Kosloff, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at age 74 after a long illness. Alan was born on December 11, 1946 in Waterbury, CT to Harry and Paulette (Wolozin) Kosloff. A graduate of Crosby High School, he received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Connecticut in 1968 and his law degree cum laude from George Washington University in 1971. Before entering private practice in 1981, Alan served as Staff Attorney to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, General Counsel to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Acting Director of Solid Waste Management for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection; and Assistant Attorney General, State of Connecticut. Alan taught at the University of Connecticut School of Law for eight years, and was the Director of the Energy and Environmental Law Practice Clinic for four. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Environmental Law Section of the Connecticut Bar Association and the Chairman of the Bristol Property Renewal Corporation. While in private practice, he assisted clients in a variety of areas, including compliance, litigation and transactional work, notably championing alternate energy production and shepherding the Oxford Energy Tires to Energy project. Alan was an engaged and generous member of his community, serving on a number of nonprofit boards, including Opera Connecticut, the University of Connecticut Cancer Research Fund, Chabad House, and the Emanuel Synagogue of West Hartford. He was a member of Phi Beta service fraternity. Alan was particularly proud of his work with Granville Academy, an afterschool program for inner city youth in Waterbury, CT. Beyond his myriad career accomplishments, Alan was a passionate chef, loving nothing more than entertaining friends and family. He was a lifelong learner who loved literature, political thought, lively debate, music, sports and spiritual tradition. He traveled the world and made friends everywhere he went. Alan was a Tanglewood Fellow in 1968 as both a vocalist and violinist, performing under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas and Aaron Copland. An incredibly warm and loving family man, Alan married the love of his life, Doris (Lang) Kosloff on June 22, 1969 and was blessed to celebrate 51 years of marriage. He was father to two sons, Adam (Claire) and Daniel (Megan) Kosloff and doting "Poppy" to Alexandra, Ellis and Rory. He was predeceased by his mother, Paulette, father, Harry, and brother Burt Kosloff. In addition to his immediate family, he leaves behind countless family, friends and colleagues who loved him dearly. The family will hold private services. I had only known Alan for a short while but it didn’t take long to know he was a great person and a sweet man. He always made you feel welcome and comfortable. He was an inspiration by how much he loved his darling wife, Doris. And, to learn that he’s gone has given me pause and to remember a truly great man.
