Alice Kelly Obituary

Alice Doolan Kelly of Newington, Connecticut, passed peacefully into heaven on March 6, 2017. Her transition was eased by being home and in the presence of her beloved children. She is survived by daughter, Kathleen and her husband Christopher Ballou of Chelsea, MA, her daughter, Cynthia and husband Gene Hall of Block Island, Rhode Island, her son, Peter and his partner Sue Sabella of Coventry, Connecticut, Peter's children, Elizabeth and Amanda and their mother Marianne of Willington, Connecticut, her son, Paul and his wife Rebecca of New York City. She also leaves Genevieve Hwehwe, her newest and dearest friend, who was there caring for her until the end. She was predeceased by her sisters, Rosemary Sommer and Helen Formichella. Alice's beloved husband, Francis J. Kelly, predeceased her on November 11, 2014. Alice was born in New Haven, Connecticut to Esther and Walter Doolan on December 4, 1930. Alice was Executive Assistant to the Librarian of Yale Medical School after her graduation from Hamden High School in 1949. She and Frank married in 1953 in Hamden, Connecticut and moved to Newington, Connecticut in 1962. There they raised their four children and together lived a life that was vibrant, active and rich with love. They acquired a second home on Block Island, Rhode Island, with James and Murielle Kelly in 1969, a large ramshackle house that they refurbished and maintained with their own hands. After retirement, Alice and Frank lived there 6 months a year and were active members of the Block Island community until 2005 when they moved to their Newington home full time. After focusing exclusively on the career of motherhood for 22 years, Alice began working as an administrator at the Hartford Convention and Visitors Bureau where she was a much-valued employee until her retirement in 1990. She applied her impeccable literary skills as the editor of the annual Visitor's Guide. A genuine professional, she also shared her gifts of spunk and heartfelt friendship to her co-workers. Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 10, from 5pm to 7pm at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Avenue, Newington, CT 06111. Funeral services will begin on Saturday, March 11, at 9:15am at Newington Memorial Funeral Home and will proceed to Church of Saint Mary, 626 Willard Avenue, Newington, CT at 10am. The church service will be followed by her burial at West Meadow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice. Peter - So very sorry to hear about your mother. We only met her that one time, but she seemed like a very gracious lady. We just found out about her passing from Sandy. We hope to see you and Sue soon (in April). Until then, we'll be thinking about you. Love you. Joe and Judy Sabella

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom and Grandmother. My name is Debbie Ferguson and I am Bill and Lois Miller's daughter. Your mother was so wonderful to my mother after her stroke. She visited, she supported her and she remained her friend when many of my mother's other friends just stopped calling. Her sense of humor was amazing and the love she shared with your Dad and with all of you was always evident. I am unable to attend her wake this evening but I wanted you all to know just what your mother meant to me and my extended family. May God bless her and I know she is with your Father and smiling down on all of you. Debbie Ferguson (Miller)

My parents, now both deceased, were long time friends of Frank and Alice Kelly. I had the pleasure of working with Alice at a St. Mary Ladies Guild Fashion Show in the late 1970's and she was so friendly, and funny, and a joy to be with. My sympathies to the family from the Christopher and Harriet Finegan family.

Dear Kathy, Cindy, Peter and Paul, So sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. My parents, Mary and Bram Johnson, lived next door on Addison Road in Hamden when Kathy and Cindy were little. Our mom kept in touch for some time with Alice and Frank after the family moved to Newington. My sister Patti and I had even visited Block Island on a few occasions and got in touch and came by to see them. We both have many memories of your mom and remember her fondness. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers.

The most gracious lady. I was very lucky to meet her many moons ago on BI. She invited me to her house, gave me a grand tour, made me sample her blackberry jam, and we spent a lot of time chatting about everything. She was so steady and I was always delighted to spend time with her. She was a super-doer. Her house was always perfect and when she was outside, she would trim the bushes and clean on the side of BIG. I missed her a lot when with Francis they left BI and when I drive by her house I remember the beautiful blue eyes and the gracious lady. Alice was a very special woman with so much love for everybody. She can only go straight to Haven.
