Alice RUGENS Obituary

RUGENS, Alice (Egan) Alice (Egan) Rugens, 84, of Simsbury, passed away on Wednesday (January 12, 2011). Alice was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward, and her courageous daughter, Donna, and daughter-in-law, Kathleen. A woman of fierce loyalty and quick wit, the memory of Alice's generosity of spirit and the gleam in her bright blue eyes will remain in the hearts of all who loved her. Alice was born in New Britain, graduated from New Britain High School in 1944 and enjoyed 37 years of marriage with her husband, Edward, before his passing in 1987. Alice worked at the Connecticut Department of Labor for 23 years, retiring in 1997. Alice is survived by her devoted son, Kerry, and his wife, Anne, her brother, Vincent Egan, and his wife, Ann, and her niece and nephews. She often spoke proudly of her matchmaking efforts with Vincent and Ann. Alice also leaves her step granddaughters, her adopted family in Windsor, and her four-legged friend, Chloe, who was Alice's companion during many walks through McLean's gardens. Alice approached life with energy and enthusiasm, and in past years liked nothing more than meeting her girlfriends for lunch, or driving from place to place, helping anyone out who might need assistance. Alice was able to visit her country of origin, Ireland, during her lifetime and was very proud of her Irish heritage. Her son, Kerry, has wonderful memories of family trips taken to places all over the country, and the support he and his mom were able to give to each other during very difficult times. The family wishes to thank the loving staff at McLean in Simsbury and all of the staff at Hartford Hospital who provided wonderful care during her last few days. A Scripture Service will be held at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon on Sunday, January 16, 3 p.m., followed by a reception. Burial will be private in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111.
