Barbara Oman Obituary

OMAN, Barbara (Hobbs) of East Hartford, passed away peacefully in her sleep on her birthday, September 3, 2021. Beloved daughter of the late Kenneth and Isabell Hobbs, also of East Hartford. Loving sister of Glenda Hobbs and her husband Michael Sragow of Los Angeles, and the late Karen Hobbs Munafo and husband Richard Munafo, of South Boston. Devoted mother of three sons, the late Kenneth E. Oman, David Oman and his wife Michelle, of Andover, CT, and Gregory Oman, of Milwaukie, Oregon. Joyous and engaged grandmother to David and Michelle's daughters, Mikayla and Halie Oman. She was married to the late Elton Oman and the late Steve Dumeer. She was a gifted and dedicated elementary school teacher for four decades, mostly in East Hartford Public Schools. She graduated from East Hartford High School in 1962 and received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Hartford and her Master of Science in Education from Central Connecticut State University. Selfless, creative, and boundlessly enthusiastic, she was loved and admired by students and colleagues alike. Her many friends will miss her fun-loving spirit, her hearty laugh, and her generous soul. Visiting Hours are Thursday, Sept. 23, 4-7 p.m., at the Newkirk and Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford, CT. 06108. A Memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, also at Newkirk and Whitney followed by a burial at Hillside Cemetery in East Hartford. Miss Hobbs was my favorite grammar school teacher! She was so interesting, intelligent and fun! She really instilled a love of American history, poetry and even taught us un peu de francais! A pretty amazing person all around!! She really made a positive difference in my life and the lives of so many! Thank you, Miss Hobbs! Au revoir!

Dear Family of Barbara Oman; I was so sad to hear in the passing of your dear mother. I had the privilege meeting Barb when we first moved to East Hartford and was my son's teacher (i believe 5th grade) Her son Greg and my son Jeremy became fast friends. I enjoyed her company so much .. we used to go hear the boys play in the school band (we giggled so much because we were so proud of our sons) and at football games! I miss those days. I will miss her. Barb, you were one of the sweetest persons I have ever met. I cannot come tonight to pay my respects .. feeling a little under the weather but my thoughts are with you all.

Barbara was a wonderful friend. I will miss her working with me for reunions and our lunches with many EHHS graduates. Barbara was the most loving and compassionate person. I saw her on August 3,2021 to get the finances on our reunions. She was effervescent and loving. I will miss her so very much. She was a favorite classmate.
