Benjamin Goldfarb Obituary

Goldfarb, Benjamin S., "Ben", age 98, of West Hartford, CT, passed away peacefully at his home on February 23rd. Ben's parents, Meyer and Sarah (Gopin) Goldfarb emigrated from Poland to Toronto, Canada in July 1921. Ben was born in Toronto on June 30, 1922. Ben is predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, Dolly (Fiedler) Goldfarb, and by his daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Babson. He is survived by his children, Andrew Goldfarb of San Francisco, CA and Katie Ebersman and her husband David Ebersman of Tyngsboro, MA; his grandchildren, Caroline Babson, of New York, NY, Andrew Babson, of Philadelphia, PA, and Emily and Simon Ebersman of Tyngsboro, MA, and several beloved nieces and nephews. Ben was predeceased by his brother, Harry E. Goldfarb, and his sisters Ida Shoor and Rose Silver. He also leaves many cherished friends and dedicated caregivers. Ben was a 1940 graduate of Weaver High School in Hartford, CT. He worked at Michael's Jewelers after high school and then joined his brother, Harry, at the Mercury Oil Company, where he worked for many years. Ben was a surgical technician during WWII, serving with the 54th General Hospital in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. Ben was an active volunteer who spent thousands of hours at Hartford Hospital with the Mended Hearts Program and with the Institutional Review Board, as a community non-scientific member, overseeing research projects at Hartford Hospital. He loved golf, dancing, and fresh and saltwater fishing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and prided himself on remembering and telling jokes for every occasion. It was love at first sight when Ben and Dolly met in 1948. Together, they enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and their many friends. There will be a private interment service at Beth Israel Cemetery in Avon, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mended Hearts, www.mendedheartsCT.org, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at 659 Tower Ave., Hartford, CT 06119. Deepest heartfelt thanks go to Eveth, Brunhilde, Nell, Peaches, Barbara, and Nyoka for the amazing care they gave to Ben during the last few years of his life. Because of them, he was able to stay in the house he loved.

This is a belated message to Betsy, Katy and Andrew as I last spoke to your Dad on 12/7/2020 and was shocked today when I was calling him on what I thought would be his 99th birthday. I always enjoyed our time at Mercury Oil and keeping in touch over the many years since. I will truly miss him as we shared many stories.

Dear Katie, Andy and all those who loved this wonderful man,

Ben, Dolly and all their family were such good friends to my beloved Peter B. Janes for so many years and to me after Peter and I met. Long after Peter left this life at the end of 2008, Ben continued to call every so often to check up on me. I can still hear his warm voice. I already miss him and will always be grateful to have known him and his wonderful family. My deepest condolences to all of you.

Dear Katie, Andy and Family and Friends: Ben and Dolly were the best neighbors and lifelong friends that anyone could hope for. You and they were an essential part of my childhood and many of my favorite memories of West Hartford, and I am so glad we kept in touch even after life took me away to other regions. Love, Derek

I always knew he was smart but I did not know about all the things he did in his life. Amazing
