Carl Folia Obituary

Dr. Carl R. Folia, DMD, 93, of Avon, beloved husband of the late Phyllis (McNeil) Folia, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020. Born in Athol, MA, son of the late John and Virginia (Giberti) Foglia, he was raised there and graduated from the Mass Maritime Academy and earned his BS in Marine and Electrical Engineering from U Mass. A scholar and an athlete, he played hockey for four years where he was Captain of the team and voted MVP. He excelled at baseball and was particularly proud of his final college game where as catcher he played for 18 innings with a record 3 hits, 3 runs, and 2 errors. His team won and his parents were there to cheer him on. He served as an Ensign in the US Navy after graduation from the MA Maritime Academy as a shipping officer during WWII. He went on to Tufts Dental School after WWII and earned his DMD and went on to serve as a dentist at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD for three years during the Korean War where he met and married Phyllis McNeil. After his discharge they moved to Connecticut where he established a dental practice in Farmington and practiced for 39 years before retirement in 1992. Still the athlete, he enjoyed skiing, especially at Round Top Mountain, VT, Colorado, and Utah; tennis, scuba diving, and kayaking all sports he enjoyed with his family up into his nineties. He even coached his sons Little League teams. Dr. Folia was a member of the Hartford, CT, and American Dental Associations; the Farmington Exchange Club; and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council # 32 Unionville. He leaves his children, Carl R. Folia, Jr. of Avon, Scott J. Folia of Chaplin, Marybeth Folia of Mexico, and Patricia Carnright and her husband Michael of Canton; grandchildren, who helped him with his computer, Luke Carnright and Danielle Folia; and a sister Claire Woods of FL. Besides his wife Phyllis, he was predeceased by a daughter Judith Alison formerly of Goshen and a brother John Foglia, Jr. His family will receive friends Wednesday, February 5, 2020, from 9:30 am – 10:30 am at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at the Church of Saint Ann, 289 Arch Road, Avon. Burial will follow with military honors in St. Ann Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Gifts of Love, 34 East Main Street, Avon, CT 06001.
