Carlos Benavides Obituary

Carlos Roberto Gonzalo Andres Benavides, MD, in classic form, chose Christmas Day to cross over, back to God. He was born June 16, 1934 into the arms of Elena Spikula Benavides and Jaime Benavides, MD of Laurelton, NY. He spent his childhood in NY and Costa Rica, walking uphill to school both ways. When he was 14 he drove with his mother and sister, Nena, across the country and boarded a ship to join his father in Japan. There he graduated High School as Valedictorian in his class of one. He received his BS from the University of Michigan and went on to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. While completing his internship he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Watts. After serving 3 years as a lieutenant/physician in the Navy, he married Betty in 1964, whisking her away from the wedding in a helicopter. They returned to NYC where he completed his residencies at Lenox Hill Hospital and the NY Eye & Ear Infirmary. The family moved to Glastonbury, CT in 1971 and he began practicing as an ENT in Manchester "stomping out disease and suffering" until his 80th birthday. He may have been behind schedule every day in the office, but he practiced old-school medicine, listening and caring deeply for all he treated no matter how long it took. He ran 44 Manchester Road Races and 4 marathons. We will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife Betty and his children Caroline & Lincoln Woodard of Glastonbury, Elizabeth & Jeffrey LoVetere of Colchester, Maria Benavides & Will Sharp of Bend, OR, and Rob & Becca Benavides of West Hartford. He was also the best Bubba to his 10 grandchildren: Elena, Ben, Anna, Shawn, Brayden, Ryan, Ethan, Sonora, Taylor and Mason. A Celebration of Life is planned for early Spring. I am so sorry to learn of the passing of one of the best Doctors ever! We originally started visiting him when my daughter was in Kindergarten (approx 1988) & was having difficulty with different letter sounds. Dr B put tubes in both ears. FF to 1st grade when she began having hearing difficulties again, however, this time the tonsils were involved. Dr B removed her tonsils & adenoids & then replaced the smaller ear tubes with larger tubes.
Along the way, I discussed my chronic sinus infections. Dr B sent me for typical allergy testing. When the results came in and claimed that I didn't have any allergies, Dr B said "I don't believe it. Take this order, go across the street and get blood testing done and I'll see you back here after the results come back". Done & done....and needless to say, I have a page full of allergies! A little bit later, after telling him of some other minor symptoms, he sent me for more blood tests. I didn't know for what but it came back then I had an autoimmune thyroid disease with hypothyroidism. He was a very very wise man! I have always said throughout my life that I don't mind if a doctor is running late because that just tells me that he cares about his patients enough to not be looking at the clock. I was surprised by that in his obit. Not only will he be missed by the many that he helped, but by the many that won't have the opportunity to be helped by him. In my eyes he was a great man and from what I read, he is a great man to his family. God bless you all and I hope he's saving us a seat up there! Best wishes!

Betty, I am so sorry to see that your dear husband has died, and on Christmas Day at that! I have fond memories of you and can hear your voice in my head even though it has been a long time since we have seen one another. I was interested that Carlos went to UPENN Medical School, as did Al. My thoughts are with you and your family. WOHELO. Hugs, Kathy Herzog

I am sorry to see that Doctor Benavides has passed away. My sincere condolences to his family.
Leading up to the 4th of July in 1976, I was a passenger in a Volkswagen Beetle that went off the road and hit a utility pole. I went through the windshield and hit the pole with the right side of my face. I shattered my cheekbone into 26 pieces, broke or chipped most of my teeth and numerous other injuries. Dr. Benavides was able to repair my cheek with some type of medical super glue and his surgical expertise. I thank him for his workmanship and he will surely be missed.

To the Benavides Family,
I was very sorry to hear of Carlos' passing. We were in practice for many years in Manchester. He was a kind, friendly and intelligent doctor who related well to his patients. He was very interested in Ear Nose and Throat Allergy Disorders and helped many patients in this way. I'm sure he will be missed by all.
