Charles KAMAN Obituary

KAMAN, Charles H. Charles Huron Kaman, one of the leading aviation pioneers of the 20th century and a great entrepreneur and humanitarian, died Monday, (January 31, 2011) in Bloomfield, CT. He was 91. Mr. Kaman was predeceased by his wife, Roberta (Hallock) and his first wife Helen (Sylvander). He is survived by sons C. William Kaman II of Jacksonville, FL, and Steven W. Kaman of Los Angeles, CA; a daughter, Cathleen Kaman, of Santa Fe, NM; grandchildren Charles Tyson Kaman, Kathryn Kaman Filippetti, Zane Nolan Kaman Wood, Cameryn Helen Kaman; and two great-granddaughters. Mr. Kaman was a 26-year-old engineer in 1945 when he founded Kaman Aircraft Company in the garage of his mother's West Hartford, Connecticut home with $2,000 invested by two friends. He started the company to demonstrate a new rotor concept he devised to make helicopters more stable and easier to fly. Over the next half-century, Mr. Kaman built the company into a worldwide leader in the aviation industry. Kaman Aircraft, now Kaman Corporation, has become a billion-dollar company. A pioneer in rotary-winged flight and one of Connecticut's great inventors and innovators, Kaman's helicopters achieved many breakthroughs, including the first gas turbine-powered helicopter, the first twin-turbine-powered helicopter, the first remotely controlled helicopter and the first all-composite rotor blade. Over the years, his helicopters set numerous records for performance and altitude. While building a worldwide reputation as a successful inventor and entrepreneur, Mr. Kaman also became admired for his humanitarian efforts in connection with his work for the vision-impaired. With his late wife, Roberta, he founded Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, a groundbreaking business which breeds and trains guide dogs for the blind at its Bloomfield, CT headquarters. Mr. Kaman was a leader who created a culture of accomplishment in his businesses, and who also created an environment where people knew they could be at their best in working for and with him. A visionary for his talents in diversifying business, Mr. Kaman explored numerous other opportunities through Kaman Corporation, from laser optics and space systems to industrial services and distribution. In the 1960s, Mr. Kaman - an accomplished guitar player who once turned down an offer to play with Tommy Dorsey's orchestra to pursue his career in helicopters – formed Kaman Music. He used his knowledge of vibration and composite materials gained from building helicopters to design the popular, round-backed Ovation Guitar, a major innovation in the 20th century music business. Born on June 15, 1919, he grew up in Washington, D.C. His father, born in Germany, supervised construction on the Supreme Court and other buildings in the capital city. As a teen-aged aviation enthusiast, Charlie set national duration records for hand-launched model gliders. He dreamed of becoming a professional pilot, but deafness in one ear forced him to change his plans. He earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from Catholic University, graduating magna cum laude at the top of his engineering class in 1940. He took a position in the propeller performance unit at Hamilton Standard. While working on propeller dynamics, he met Igor Sikorsky, who was developing helicopters for another division of United Aircraft. As he later recalled, his life was changed the first time he observed Mr. Sikorsky's pioneering work with helicopters. When Mr. Kaman entered the fledgling business of vertical flight, helicopters were unstable and difficult to fly. Working at home nights and weekends, Mr. Kaman developed a new concept of rotor control based on "servo-flaps." These were small ailerons added to the edges of the rotor blades to improve helicopter stability. He also proposed intermeshing rotors, which would increase lift while eliminating the tail rotor. These inventions became the hallmarks of all Kaman helicopters to follow. The first Kaman helicopter, the K-125, lifted off the ground on January 15, 1947. It was a short flight, with the aircraft tethered to remain within six inches of the ground. The first free flight occurred that spring, with a test pilot executing a vertical takeoff to 50 feet and flying figure-eights at 50-60 miles per hour. The company got its first big break in 1948 when the U.S. Navy bought two of his helicopters for evaluation. Kaman's SH-2 Seasprite line of helicopters flew more than one million hours in service with the U.S. Navy – in anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship surveillance and targeting, search and rescue, and utility operations. One of the proudest accomplishments of Mr. Kaman's distinguished career was the more than 15,000 lives that Kaman helicopters were estimated to have saved over the second half of the 20th century. The Kaman H-43 "Husky" flew more rescue missions during the Korean and Vietnam wars than all other helicopters combined, and remains the only military helicopter to serve throughout its service life with no loss of life or accidents attributed to its design. In 1992, Kaman introduced the K-MAX® "aerial truck," the first helicopter specifically designed for repetitive heavy-lift operations. K-MAX has been used in logging, construction, mining, firefighting, oil and gas exploration, and other high-altitude work. In keeping with the value Mr. Kaman always put on human life two K-MAX aircraft are currently undergoing modifications to be deployed to Afghanistan in an unmanned cargo resupply role. While Kaman Corporation stands as a testament to his significant business achievements, a series of distinguished awards speak to Mr. Kaman's human achievements. In 1997, he joined other aviation greats – including Charles Lindbergh, Jimmy Doolittle, Neil Armstrong and Igor Sikorsky – as a recipient of the National Aeronautic Association's Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy, the nation's premier aviation award. President Clinton presented him with the National Medal of Technology, the nation's highest recognition for contributions to technical excellence in 1996. He also received the Connecticut Medal of Technology; the U.S. Department of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal; the Aviation Week and Space Technology Laurel; and the Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Award. He was inducted into the Hall of Honor of the National Museum of Naval Aviation and was named an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He also received honorary doctorates from the University of Connecticut, the University of Hartford, of which he was one of a group of founders, and the University of Colorado. At the time of his death, Mr. Kaman was chairman emeritus of the corporation. The family would like to acknowledge Mr. Kaman's long time assistant, Cheryl Mittica, for her dedicated service to him in his later years. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 5 Steele Road, New Hartford, CT has care of arrangements. Services will be private. Visit an online guestbook at Montano-shea.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charles H. Kaman Charitable Foundation, Inc. a charitable foundation established by Mr. Kaman to support the work of several charitable organizations; c/o John C. Memories and Condolences
for Charles KAMAN

Not sure what to say?

MR. CHARLES H. KAMAN and my father, Sgt. Earl Moffatt were good friends and my dad often gave Mr. Kaman advice on which pups from new litters with Fidelco would be best for the blind or police work. I often would visit the Kaman home in Simsbury with my dad on weekends for these reasons.

My father became the first, training director for the Fidelco Foundation.

Mr. Kaman let me "show" his prized german shepherd in a show ring, where I won a ribbon. I believe I was the only one to have been allowed to show that beautiful shepherd due to his relationship with my father.

I will always miss, Mr. Charles H. Kaman and his beautiful wife, Roberta.

My memories of Charles Kaman are wonderful ones, though a short period of time that I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know him. It was, and will remain a highlight in my life. I was online looking at historical houses in the United States, and thought about the pictures that Mr Kaman shared with me once of his beautiful home on Avon Mountain, in Ct. The pictures he stated, were taken by a flyby in one of his Kaman Helicopters, and the view and his home,(the back yard)was spectacular. More memorable was the conversations about his life and inventions that he shared with me, and me, being a avid fan of the aviation industry and intrigued by the mind of an inventor, he had gained my undivided attention and reminded me of a younger time in my life when to dream was refreshing, and how he, as a dreamer had turned his dreams into a reality. I was overwhelmingly impressed and inspired. Mr. Kaman at the time was recovering at a West Hartford care facility, and my role was as a Certified Nurses Aide, and it was my Personal and Professional pleasure to have met and assisted him. My condolences to his family and friends on your lost, and a thousand and one apologies for my late acknowledgments. Respectfully. James Mclennon.

...a Legend, now, and forever missed by those who knew him, and worked for him.
I am Proud of working here for over 30 years, and even Prouder that "CHK" knew me by name. He was a man of class, and
distinction, who went out of his way to make sure that his "People" always had a paycheck at the end of the week.
God Bless You Charlie.

My sincere condolences to the Kaman family. I grew up with Kaman as a household word as my father had started as part of the engineering staff in the original garage and worked with Kaman until he died in 1967. I met Charlie and Robbie later and was so impressed with their dedication to their dogs. They were most gracious. Charlie was always larger than life, but also a down to earth person.

While I only worked at Kaman for 4 1/2 years I did have the honor of meeting Charlie a few times, always a gentleman.

Charlie Kaman was a great visionary and leader over many years of his own companies. . He also was a thoughtful intelligent member of my Board of Directors at
Security Connecticut Life Insurance Company and provided advice without getting more involved than appropriate. He had wisdom and a considerate thoughtful way of influencing others. It was nice to have known you Charlie.

I learned a great deal from Charlie and many others while working at Kaman. It is easy to see why Charlie would say, "Kaman's strength is its people." True then, true today, true tomorrow. Kaman, the man, will be missed. Kaman the company is a fine, lasting legacy.

Charlie was part of my life for 40 years. Some of it was rocky, some of it was wonderful, but all of it was interesting. His vision-his intelligence, his wisdom and leadership all added up to a lifetime of success for many of us. I'm honored to have worked with Charlie.

My condolences to the Kaman Family on the passing of Mr. Kaman. I worked at Kaman, Bloomfield, from 1965-1975 as a young engineer. I was given a lot of opportunities, and learned a great deal, at the company Charlie founded. His presence was always felt from the "penthouse" in our building and I was always impressed (and somewhat awed like everyone else) in my meetings with him. My family enjoyed the Christmas parties and I especially liked the events when Charlie would play his guitar. With his accomplishments in helicopters, guitars and Fidelco, as well as building his company, Charlie led a life well spent. The world will miss him.

From an old SH-2F Seasprite pilot: It was a great helicopter and I flew it most of my Navy career. It was an incredible design that made me feel safer flying it than the others I flew. The helicopter was so durable that, despite being shot up, it safely got my friend back from a rescue opeation in Viet Nam that eventually earned him the Medal of Honor for his efforts. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, Charlie. Thank you for your contribution to Naval aviation.

To the entire Kaman family-
I never had the chance to meet Mr. Kaman personally, but his name and reputation was stellar in the Hartford area, especially to my late father, George Slossberg.

My dad was in a plane crash in Sept of 1978 and somehow lived through it ( to the ripe old age of 83 - he passed in 04) Mr Kaman somehow arranged to get a MU2 to pick me up in Charlotte NC and fly me to Hartford so I could get quickly to Mt Sinai while he was still on the Critical List. I will never forget my fear of that quick and steep take off and landing as well as the fear of possibly not seeing him in time. I would have liked to thank him in person for that very generous act.

He flys now in a different sort of way -and may he be at Peace.

May God be with you during your time of mourning.

Sincerely,
Joanne ( Slossberg ) Kelly, daughter of the Late Great George Slossberg

My father was one of the early employees at Kaman Aircraft when it was based at Bradley Field. He remained a loyal employee for about 25 years until his retirement. In those early years I remember going to the annual Christmas parties where Mr. Kaman would play seasonal favorites on the guitar, and all kids in attendance were given wonderful presents. My first summer job was at Kaman. Working at Kaman was a very important part of my father's life, and mine, and I know that if my father were alive that he would be as saddened as I am to learn of Mr. Kaman's passing. My father's success at Kaman helped to pay for my education, and for that I'll always be grateful. My deepest condolences to the Kaman family. Mr. Kaman's life touched the lives of others in so many wonderful ways.

I remember when my father Peter did electrical work for Charlie when he first started his company.
His test pilots tried to get my Dad to go for a ride but my dad had never flown at that time and he told them he didn't go any higher than a ladder.
Then the test pilot went up turned off the engine, and thru out the keys. The twin rotor design allowed the helicopter to come safely down- with a few big bounces. Needless to say my dad never would go after seeing that.
The industry has lost a great leader.
May God be with the entire Kaman Family during these times.
Sincerely,
P.J. Lodola & Sons Inc

I have been a volunteer in one way or another for Fidelco for over 20 years. Although I only knew Charlie through things I read from Fidelco, I thought he and Roberta were the most endearing people I had ever met; people with extreme intelligence and commitment without a shred of self-promotion. It is sad to say goodbye, but Charlie is now with Roberta which is where I am sure he longed to be.

My Dad worked at the Moosup, Ct. plant for many many years. And I worked there in the Musical Instrument Division, making our beloved Ovation guitars. We had the best pay and the best benefits in the area because Charlie truly cared about his workers. He was a true pioneer in the aviation field, in the music field, and also a great humanitarian.

God bless Charlie, and his family.
