Daniel McCabe Obituary

Sister Daniel Marie McCabe (Clare McCabe), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry, West Hartford, CT died at the Provincial House of the Sisters of St. Joseph on Monday, January 8, 2024. Born in Ansonia, CT on September 30, 1924 of the late Daniel James McCabe and Delia (Buckley) McCabe, Sister Daniel Marie entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1946 and celebrated her Profession of Vows on August 24, 1952. At the time of her death she was 99 years of age and was in her 77th year of Religious Life.

Sister Daniel Marie McCabe was a graduate of St. Mary's School of Nursing, Waterbury, CT. Sister earned a Bachelor's Degree from the Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT and a Master's Degree in Health Care Administration from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO which was followed by a Residency in St. Vincent Hospital, New York City. In 1948, Sister Daniel Marie was assigned to St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT as Nursing Supervisor in Surgery until 1951 when Sister then became Assistant Administrator of St. Francis Hospital. In 1963 Sister Daniel Marie assumed the position of Administrator of St. Joseph Hospital, Stamford, CT and in 1985 became President/CEO of the renamed St. Joseph Medical Center, Stamford, Ct, a position she retained until her retirement in 1994.

Sister Daniel Marie was the recipient of numerous honors and awards among others, the 1985 Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Sacred Heart University; the 1990 Papal Honor from Pope John Paul II – Pro Ecclesia Et Pontificie; Outstanding Woman of the Year from the Soroptimist International of Stamford; the Ella Grasso Community Service award from the Judeo-Christian Woman of Fairfield County and the National Human Relations Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

Sister Daniel Marie, a member of several professional associations, was appointed to the Board of Licensure of Nursing Homes Administrators by Governor Ella Grasso, and Governor Meskell appointed her Chairperson of the Task Force on Long Term Care and on the Governor's Advisory Council on Emergency Medical Services. Sister served on the Board of Trustees of the Connecticut Hospital Association and was appointed to the Council of Public Relations and Public Information of the American College of Administrators, Chicago, IL. Among other positions held by Sister Daniel Marie was Preceptor of Students in Health Care Administrators of St Louis University, Clinical Professor for New York University, Oral Examiner for the American College of Health Care Examiners, Chairperson and founding member of the Connecticut Council of Catholic Hospitals, the Board of Trustees of Northeast Hospital Network of Health Alliance and the Advisory Board of the Institute for the Religious Education and Pastoral Studies of Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT.

After thirty one years as Administrator/President/CEO of St. Joseph Hospital and a member of boards, Sister Daniel Marie retired from these positions and assumed the humble ministry of Director of Hospitality at the Provincial House of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, CT. For seventeen years, Sister met guests, friends and families with graciousness and kindness while seeing to the minute details for their comfort. These tasks Sister performed with loving cordiality as she had done throughout her life. The ability to make everyone feel at home was Sister Daniel Marie's God-given gift, a gift of hospitality and an embodiment of perfect charity to the dear neighbor in the true spirit of a Sister of St. Joseph. This, and her simple love and kindness towards each person will be the lasting legacy of Sister Daniel Marie to her Religious Sisters, her Family and her friends.

My name is Sr. Theresa and I knew Sr. Daniel when we were in Stamford, CT. She was an exemplary Sister-do kind hearted and compassionate!
She was the heart of St. Joseph's Hospital where she was highly respected. She balanced professionalism with true charity.
We kept in touch over the years when she retired. She had a great sense of humor and amused me with many interesting stories of her many ministries! Somehow we lost touch and I just found out she died. It was a blessing to know her and she will ALWAYS be remembered as a very dear soul who radiated God's love in all she did!

Sr. Daniel was truly the heart and hands of Christ in her ministry at St. Joseph Hospital in Stamford where we met.
Her compassion and kindness radiated God's love in every aspect of her being. It was a blessing to know her!
We kept I touch after she retired and often spoke on the phone. Over the last few years we lost contact and just today I found out she entered into Eternal Life.
May she rest in peace in God's Eternal Light and Love. She left a legacy of
charity and kindness and will ALWAYS be fondly remembered.
Sincerest condolences to her family and Community

Sister Daniel Marie....everyone knew Sister for her leadership, her devotion to ethics and to every patient in that hospital. I worked for 6 years at St Joe's in the Operating Room when she was the CEO. The surgeons respected her, the staff respected her and the hospital was truly a family oriented organization under her strict but kind leadership.
She was one of a kind her name will always be synonymous with the name St Josephs' Medical Center!

Sister Daniel Marie...as Rita Conte said....We were Family. After my year of nursing education and being trained in several local hospitals--I knew that SJMC was where I wanted and needed to work. I spent well over 20 years there, loving each and every day. Warm friendships and life long connections were made, that to this day I treasure. Sincerely, Elsie L. Ferrara, LPN
