David McKinnon Obituary

I wasn't there the morning when my father, David McKinnon, age 71, of Vernon passed away in his home unexpectedly on December 18. David was born in Hartford to Joseph and Eveleen McKinnon and raised in Windsor, CT. David had a passion for beautiful cars, from Cadillacs to Cordobas, you name it he loved to make them sparkle in the sunshine. His eyes told of unspoken words and his radiant smile would convey the happiness of his soul. His warmth, laser-like wit and ready, hearty laugh were all contagious. He found happiness in the perfect putt, the crack of the bat, the sight of the green monster, but the real meaning of his life lay in his deep love for his family and friends. He was close to his late grandmother Gertrude McKinnon, with whom he shared a deep spiritual faith. I didn't get to tell him all the things I had to say, but I want to say thank you for your guiding hand and for making all my dreams come true. I hope you're as proud of me as I am of you. He is deeply loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. David is survived by his beloved daughter Carla Marquand and his grandson Kaiden Kennedy of Fairbanks, Alaska and his great love Amalia Bohorquez of Glastonbury; by his siblings Joseph, Eveleen and Debra McKinnon; nieces Stacy, Tiffanie, Nancy, Dawn and Desiree; and his cousins Kathleen, Bill, Beth and Ellen Curry and Mary Curry Levine, Kathleen Bisson, and Chris and Marie Garlasco and Anne Grub Garlasco. His burial will be at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Carmon Funeral Home has care of arrangements. Growing up, my brother Dave was my guardian angel, protector, friend and confidant. His intelligence, wit and charm got us out of some tricky situations.

As an adult, I sought my brother’s advise on family, personal and professional matters. Dave was a sensitive, respectful listener. The depth of his love and compassion was remarkable. I still don’t believe he is gone.

David was a great brother. Life took us in different directions, but we managed to keep in touch. Every time we spoke on the phone or during those rare visits to Connecticut, my mind went back to those days on London Rd where we lived and played as kids and young adults. His life was full of ups and downs, but he was always loyal to his friends and family. He had a very unique sense of humor that no one who heard it could forget. I miss him terribly and I like to think he knows it.

David accompanied me through beautiful and difficult times. He celebrated with me important moments such as the birth of my grandkids, recitals, games, birthdays... He also corrected my English and was an excellent teacher.

On September 19th, 2004 a great love was born. David was thoughtful, affectionate and a good dancer. We never forgot this special date.

I feel so fortunate to have shared many beautiful moments with David who became like a grandfather for my kids offering unconditional love. He was one of the first people we met when we moved to Connecticut from Massachusetts and previously from California. He made us love CT since he was very knowledgeable about the history of the state and knew about many beautiful local places. Although he never became comfortable with the GPS or with phones apps such as waze or google maps, he loved to find places with his atlas, and was a passionate photographer. David will always be in a special place in my heart, and my family and I will miss him tremendously.

David was a good friend, a good soul with a big heart. But it was his quick wit and charming , loving and brutally honest sense of humor , with that twinkle in his eye, which I will never forget.
