Doris Silk Obituary

The world has lost a unique and adventurous woman. Doris Silk (Kaplan) was a force to be reckoned with from the day she was born. Known as the "Duchess" by her family and childhood friends, Doris always had a flair and a flavor for the finer things.Born in Newburgh, NY to the late Morris and Sallie Kaplan, Doris began a tradition early on that would come to define her as the friend you would have for life. She attended Boston University and New York University. She married her husband of nearly 60 years, Mark Silk, M.D., and was by his side throughout his medical training, which took them to New York City, where she worked at ABC Television, as well as Boston, Baltimore, London, St. Louis and eventually Hartford where Mark established his medical practice. Her peripatetic existence would take her around the globe to remote places that few would be brave enough to visit such as Syria and Burma. Doris was also part of the first group of Americans, including Senator John Glenn, to visit mainland China after the normalization of relations. Along with the souvenirs she collected along the way, she always brought back a treasure trove of amazing and humorous stories. Some of her favorite travel memories were strolling department stores in Tokyo and dancing by Banderas Bay while watching the sunsets with her family in Puerto Vallarta. She was a loving and proud mother to Stacy Rome (husband David), and granddaughters, Isabelle and Rachel (husband Carl, great-granddaughter Gwendolyn), Courtney Silk (husband Bill Walter), and Kelly Silk (husband Damon Saltzburg) and granddaughter, Ashlyn. Doris is also survived by her sisters, Adele Becker and Lenore Leon, as well as her nieces. To Isabelle and Ashlyn, who were the lights of her life, she was affectionately known as "Shorty," "Graham Cracker" and "Grandma Hartford."Doris forged a long and successful career in the television and video industry. She was the Founder of Media Inc. She was also involved in the inception of West Hartford Community Television, served as the Vice President of the International Television and Video Association/Connecticut Chapter, was a Corporator of Renbrook School and served on the Board of the Hartford Ballet. Doris' sense of humor and adventurous spirit will be forever missed by her family, her friends and everyone who had the opportunity to know her. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 1:00 pm at Avon Old Farms Hotel, 279 Avon Mountain Road, Avon, Connecticut. For more information and to RSVP, please email: [email protected] by August 15, 2019. To Stacy Kelly and Courtney;
My heart aches for you loss. Doris was one of a kind, a force to be reckoned with and the purest of souls. I adored her and never heard anyone utter a bad word about her (believe me if they did, they´d instantly regret it!) She always had the best laugh, stories and cheerleading spirit when work was tough. We had our own secret "DS" club , which I cherish to this day. You ladies were so lucky to have had this unique and wonderful woman as your mom. I miss the DS hugs. Xo

On this sixth anniversary of your passing, Mom, my heart is filled with both sorrow and gratitude. Sorrow for the loss of someone so deeply loved, and gratitude for the incredible impact you had on my life. It feels like just yesterday I was learning from you, leaning on you, and soaking in your wisdom.
You were unlike anyone I´ve ever known. Your strength, your kindness, your support-these are just a few of the things that made you so special. As a mother, you showed me what unconditional love really means. Your love wasn´t just in your words but in everything you did, the way you cared for us, always wanting the best for us, guiding us with a strong heart. You were an example of what it means to put family first and to always fight for the ones you love. You instilled in me the importance of compassion, empathy, and standing up for what´s right. Your influence doesn´t end with me, though. I see it every day in my daughter. I see the way she speaks about you, the way she remembers the little moments you shared together, the way she carries forward your love for others. You have left an indelible mark on her, just as you did on me. She looks to you as a role model, just as I always did. In her eyes, you were the perfect example of how to live a life filled with kindness and strength, and I know that your spirit lives on in her. I miss you more than words can ever express, but I carry your legacy with me. Your love, your lessons, and your belief in us are woven into the fabric of who we are. Thank you, Mom, for being the light in our lives. We will continue to honor your memory and keep your love alive in everything we do. You will never be forgotten.

I am in complete shock over this and I know I´m a little late to the game but I just found out. This is why I haven´t heard from my beloved Doris as I have been trying to call her for years thinking it was the pandemic as the reason we didn´t speak and I did not even understand when someone just told me that she passed away it´s just I can´t wrap my head around it. I love this woman so much as everyone did anyone who ever met Doris Silk would fall in love with her. She was the most adorable. Obviously we all know what she looked like in her personality but just deeply connected as a human being such a good person our chats I can´t even tell you were so meaningful she was so loving and respectful to myself and to my daughter I will love you always Doris "my DS " as we would always call each other we were a very special group she´s say, "were in the DS group"... I love you and I am so sorry for anyone who knew Doris because you knew how great she was and it´s a big loss for the world.

Doris was a long time client of mine. I've worked with her for many years and I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing. She was such a pleasure to work with. I can't believe I won't be talking to her again. She told me so many stories. She told me about meeting my favorite actor Robin Williams in Mexico. They both had rented a place at the same beach. She was very gifted at story telling. I will truly miss her.

Doris Silk was a very dear friend who my whole family loved as if she was a member of our own. Until recently, she knew me the entirety of my life (literally), which is now in the mid-50s. She always made time to talk and her sense of humor was second to none. I always thought of her as a second mother, and grieve her passing very much.
