GRISWOLD, Edith W. Edith W. Griswold, mother of E. Bulkeley Griswold of Wilton, died Sunday, (November 14, 2004) after a gradual decline in health at the Greens at Cannondale, an assisted living facility in Wilton where she had been living for six years. She was 96 years old and the widow of Edward North Griswold, Jr. of Hartford, a vice president of the former Connecticut Bank & Trust Company. Edith Josaphine Werdelin was born on June 21, 1908 in Portland, the only daughter of Swedish American parents, Edwin and Emelia Werdelin. A graduate of Portland High School, she worked as an assistant to the president of Connecticut Bank and Trust Company in Hartford where she met her husband. Edith married Edward North Griswold, Jr. in 1936 and lived in Wethersfield for 56 years before moving to Wilton to be closer to her family. She was a 65 year member of The First Church of Christ Congregational in Wethersfield and was a charter member of the Hoe and Hope Garden Club where she won several flower arranging awards. A piano player and music lover, Edie joined the choir at the Greens and enjoyed winning many "Name that Tune" contests. She leaves her son, E. Bulkeley Griswold, his wife, Lila; three grandchildren, Edward "Andy" Griswold of Wellesley Hills, MA, Lianne Acosta-Rua of Wilton and Roger Griswold of Weston; and four great-grandchildren. A private burial service will be held at the First Church Cemetery in Wethersfield next week, and a memorial service will be held there at 11 a.m. on December 4. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to The First Church of Christ, 250 Main Street, Wethersfield, CT 06109. The Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
