Edward Furey Obituary

Edward H. "Ted" Furey, 82, of Thompsonville died on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at Hartford Hospital from cardiac complications. He was born on August 13, 1938, to Willard H. Furey and Marion Hines Furey of Thompsonville. After graduating from Cathedral High School in Springfield, he attended Fairfield University and Elms College. He taught multiple generations of students at St. Bernard Catholic School in a career that lasted more than 50 years. For many years, he was associated with the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston, including roles in creating a liturgical museum for the Cathedral and directing its liturgical decorations under the Rectorship of Rev. John J. Connolly. One of his abiding passions was learning and teaching others about the ecclesiastical architecture of the 19th Century Irish-American architect Patrick Keely, who designed hundreds of churches and cathedrals throughout the United States. Ted founded the Keely Society in 1996, held numerous events celebrating the architect's life, and presented many programs on Keely's architecture over the last 25 years. The love of Ted's life was Old Lyme Shores and the lifelong families and friends he knew there. From the first cool day of spring, to a sweltering day in the middle of summer, from a hurricane in late November, to a quiet snowy day at winter's close, Ted was always ready for a drive to the shore. He is survived by his sister Maryan ("Sister") Furey Elder of Annapolis, Maryland, his cousin Ann Hines LoVoi of Thompsonville, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives, and many beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Willard, William, Francis, and Elizabeth Furey. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his and his sister Elizabeth Furey's names to Special Olympics Connecticut. Services to honor Ted's memory will take place in the future.

Mr Furey was a very kind man who I always enjoyed talking to and loved his Irish Heritage. It was always fun to run into him at Caronna’s market, you always left with a smile on your face after talking to him.
Condolences to the Furey Family.
Thompsonville, and the world was a better place with Mr. Furey in it. He will be missed.

Ted was not just a wonderful Man.
He was a truly wonderful Uncle.
And I will miss walking on the Rocks at Old Lyme Shores where I spent my summers with him. Talking to him and laughing!
He was such a joy in my life!
And I will miss him very much!

Our condolences on your loss of Ted. We will miss his familiar smile, friendliness, his love of OLS, and his colorful Hawaiian shirts. We enjoyed his sharing the history of the beach with his many photos and stories. May he rest in piece. The McDonald family.

He was Edward, Ted, E.H.P.F., and Mr. Furey to many, but to my siblings and me he was Uncle Teddy. He was our grownup playmate, the captain of our adventures, the architect of our summer days at the shore, and more.
We knew him in every season, but summer stands out for sure. He showed me it’s possible to see more than one tide, to be present for both the low and the high of each day, how to stand in the shallows if you want to sink in and how to walk through deep waves if you don’t want to fall down. With Teddy we learned about states of matter, sand matter—from the perfectly dry for sprinkling to the hard packed for building to the wet for drizzling—and what kind of sand castle needed which, and when, to make it last the longest. We learned how to build using nothing but nature, how to dam up a creek, how to build tiny coastal villages made of twigs, shells, seaweed, and stones. We learned about play and pretend, about getting outside and coming back for more.
Teddy taught us to know that the fog would burn off, the sun would come out, the sea might churn up but it would also, eventually, lay down.
He took us sailing on a tiny styrofoam boat that gave us some of the biggest adventures of our little lives.
This Thanksgiving I am grateful for the life he lived and the gifts he gave.

Mr. Furey was one of my favorite teachers at St. Bernard School. Art class was so much fun. He was always super nice to my sisters (who also had him in 6th grade) and my daughter who had him for art class. He was a legend! My condolences to his family and friends.

Ted was a man of faith, persistence, creativity and intelligence, who used his gifts to encourage others to see the beauty around them. This was true in his garden, in his lifelong work to learn about and foster church art and architecture, and in his limitless capacity to give his time, talent and treasure for others. He lived Dante Alighieri's proclamation: "Beauty awakens the soul to act."

I will miss seeing Teddy at Old Lyme Shores. Always was an interesting person to talk with. Loved his matching bathing suit and top. Very unique. May he rest in peace. Old Lyme will not be the same without him in it.
