Edward Madigan Obituary

Edward Steven Madigan 62, of Barkhamsted, CT, died peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Hartford Hospital due to complications following heart surgery. Beloved partner of Beth Zils and loving son of Edward and Maryanne Madigan, Ed made his mark on the Farmington Valley and will be deeply missed by many. He grew up in Farmington before moving to Canton where he built a beautiful house with his wife Donna Madigan and raised their son Steven Madigan and stepsons Bryan and Craig Rydingsward. He moved to Barkhamsted in 1998 where he has since resided with Beth Zils. Ed had many talents and interests over the years and was an excellent athlete in his younger years. As a youth he enjoyed playing football for Farmington High School as well as diving, water skiing, gymnastics, skateboarding, skating and skiing. In later years he loved adventure and became an avid mountain biker, cyclist, hiker and camper, climbing many 4000' New England peaks in the winter. More recently he enjoyed fishing, hiking and taking walks with his and Beth's three German Shepherds that he loved so much. Throughout his entire life, he loved spending summers at the family cottage in Westbrook with family and friends. Boating, swimming, beach time, fires in the yard and evenings on the deck were among his favorite pastimes in Westbrook. He was always working around the house on various projects and could fix just about anything. He particularly enjoyed tinkering with the 1964 Ford Galaxie he inherited from his father and was also quite a collector, with collections of historic postcards, antique insulators and guns. Ed worked as a quality control inspector at TLD/ACE in Bloomfield for 35 years where he was well respected for his dedication, skill and good nature. Ed was a social, upbeat and caring person who stayed close with many friends from all phases of his life, including those at his favorite hangout, the Cambridge House. Ed will be missed by so many and family gatherings will never be the same without his smile and laughter. In addition to his longtime partner Beth Zils, Ed leaves behind his mother Maryanne Madigan, brothers and sisters-in-law David and Wendy Madigan and Scott and Diane Madigan, stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law Bryan and Jessica Rydingsward and Craig and Chrissy Rydingsward along with nephews and nieces Rebecca Madigan, Kyle Madigan, Colin Madigan and Lindsay Madigan and step-grandchildren Caiden Rydingsward, Brooke Rydingsward, Will Rydingsward and Alex Rydingsward. He is predeceased by his father Edward F. Madigan and his son Steven who passed away in 2021. Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville on Friday, December 9th from 4:00-7:00 pm. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, December 10th at 10:00 am in the Church of St. Patrick, 110 Main St., Farmington followed by burial in Riverside Cemetery, Farmington. All are kindly asked to meet directly at Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association in Memory of Ed Madigan. Another year and missed just as much. You remain mentioned often at our gatherings, and we only wish you were still with the gang.

I often reflect on the memories and fun we had together, and smile from how glad I am for our friendship. Miss you lots, bud!

Cheers forever, Tom

A year has passed, and the pain remains - a huge void from your absence. Miss you bud, and whenever the old crew gets together, thoughts of you come out from all, as you were always such a big part of it.

You'll always remain in our hearts, and whenever I hoist a beer I offer a personal toast to you compadre.

And may the bell at Cambridge House ring loud & often!

Cheers & blessings, Tom

I am devastated about Ed's passing, and my deepest thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all he touched. We remained close friends since childhood and had many great times, which sadly will now end. So glad Ed was a part of my life - one of the East Farms boys to bond with through all the years and adventures, through FHS and beyond, staying in close contact and getting together often. I cherished those times with him, and regret we'll no longer share the smiles & laughs over a few cold ones ...

His friendly, caring ways were a blessing, and will be sorely missed. RIP Eddie - your memory will remain in my heart forever.

Cheers to our lasting friendship and your magnificent life,
Tom Midney

So sad to hear. Our families were across the street in Westbrook and we grew up with the Madigan "Boys". Great bunch of guys. Loved seeing them all years later still enjoying the beach. My sincerest condolences to all.

We were kids when we met! So many years, so many great times! From early Gigathons, crazy house parties, camping, boating and of course, the beach! Always smiling and always a jovial story! Life is just wonderful! I remember when you and Donna brought Steven to a really loud house party. I believe he was a newborn! Life was always a party! I will miss you so much! I will miss my great "Kare-Bear" greetings always with a great big hug! Love you sweet Ed, forever in our hearts! Hugs to your dad and Steven! Heaven will never be the same! Xo until we meet again my friend!
