Edward MATTTHEWS Obituary

MATTTHEWS, Edward H. Edward H. Matthews, 61, of Middlefield, passed away peacefully on (June 28, 2010) surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 24, 1948 in Eastport, ME to the late Hazel and Jesse Matthews. He grew up in New Britain and attended local schools. Ed was a self taught mechanical engineer and a gifted machine programmer whose talent was admired by many in his field. He was the former owner of Tech Machine and currently owned and operated ReTech in Plainville. Besides his family and friends, Ed's passions were boating, scuba diving and cooking. His long and courageous fight with cancer made him an inspiration and symbol of hope to all who knew him. He faced incredible physical challenges yet inspired us to hold onto each day as a blessing and every moment to be treasured. Ed is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lida; his two daughters, Tammy and Karen; his stepchildren: Melanie, Cleve Huggins and his wife, Julie and their children John and Matthew; his sister Jean LaPointe; and several nieces, nephews and devoted and loving friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Chionchio, and his former wife, Carol. A Memorial Service to celebrate Ed's life will be held on Thursday, July 8th at 3 PM at the Berlin Congregational Church, 878 Worthington Ridge, Berlin. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed's memory may be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401.

Ed and Lida visited with me at my home in Sebastian, Florida, shortly before his passing. I couldn't get him to relax. He had to be busy doing things. He climed my roof, and had to clean the leaves from my gutters. He wanted to do all the cooking. He had to have cast iron pans to cook with. I didn't have any. He chastised me for not having any. "You don't have cast iron pans"?
what kind of a cook are you? He sure was a stickler for those cast iron fry pans. he went to Walmart, and bought me two sizes of cast iron pans, of which I still have today, in his memory. That insident will always be one of my most fondest memories of him. Mat God rest his soul.

I only knew Eddie as a face in the Plainville YMCA, with a smile, a joke, a story but always upbeat and pleasant. He would always share a boating, fishing, diving story that was a highlight of the day.He will be missed and I extend my deepest sympathy to his entire family

Dear Lida, Karen, Tammy, and Family;
We were saddened to hear of Ed's passing.
My fondest, and last memory of him, was when you and Ed visited, and stayed with us, at our home in Florida. Ed was not one to remain idle. He climbed up on my roof, without any regard for his safety, and cleaned out all my rain drains. He was that kind of a guy. May God rest his good soul. Our love to you.

Dear Lida and family,
What a great picture of Ed! We've never known anyone who was as determined to beat this disease with the dignity and courage that Ed did. One's fight for life is incredible and I'm sure he wanted to grasp every minute of the time hd had left with all of you! It was all meant to be that you came into each other's lives. We'll never forget your beautiful wedding. So much love you have for each other!
I know that Ed is snorkeling somewhere in the setting sun and at peace. There's much comfort in knowing that he and Balla are together revisiting all the memories you made while they were both here. He will never leave you.
You all were so devoted to his care. There's alot of comfort in knowing you did everything you could to help him.
We will be holding you in our thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Chris,Doug, Douglas, Kylee, Neil & Kip
