Edward Mayes Obituary

Reverend Edward Mayes, beloved Minister, Husband, Father, and Grandfather died at home in West Hartford on September 4th, 2022. Ed was born in New Britain to Anne and Edward Mayes. He attended New Britain Public Schools, Westminster, and Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1958. During his academic endeavors, Ed served in the army and was stationed in Germany, which was pivotal in his choosing to further his education at Hartford Seminary, where he received a Masters of Divinity in 1965. He was ordained in 1968 in Randolph center Vermont. Ed brought humor, love, music, and a sense of adventure to his congregation. Reverend Mayes came to the Flagg Rd Church in 1971 with his wife Marlene and very young children Jon, Tim, Ben, and Rebecca. He served Flagg Rd for 30 years before retiring in 2001. Interim positions followed in various Connecticut churches culminating with the Somersville Congregational Church in 2007. Ed loved sharing his understanding of the Spirit through openness and compassion, and always through stories. For the last several years, he has spent many happy hours working in the gardens and greenhouse at the 4H Education Center at Auerfarm in Bloomfield. He leaves his wife Marlene Goldkamp Mayes of West Hartford, Jonathan and Amanda Mayes of Middlebury, Timothy Mayes of West Hartford, Ben and Mary Mayes of Lebanon New Hampshire, and Rebecca and Dr. Jeffrey Goldberg of Burlington, Connecticut. He also leaves 7 Grandchildren. Tristan, D'artangan, Noah, Trevor, Leah, Kate, & Madeline, who are all joyous reflections of his heart. A memorial service will be held at the Flagg Rd United Church of Christ, 134 Flagg Rd, West Hartford, CT at 2:30 Saturday, September 10th 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Flagg Rd UCC or the 4H Educational Center at Auerfarm in Bloomfield, CT. Online expressions of sympathy maybe made at www.molloyfuneralhome.com

I am so sorry to read of the passing of Ed. My business partner and I maintained the lawns and took care of the winter snowplowing for around 15 years at the church and adjoining property. I always enjoyed talking to him and hearing his many stories. He had a great sense of humor and after talking with him I would leave with a smile on my face. May Ed's Memory Always Be A Blessing.
