Edward Sax Obituary

Edward Sax, age 94, of Bloomfield CT (formerly West Hartford and Boston) passed away on July 16, 2023. His wife, Margaret Sax, predeceased him. Growing up in Boston MA, he enjoyed repairing radios at an early age and soldered one of the first large scale computers, the Mark II, at Harvard University. Much of his childhood was spent exploring the Arnold Arboretum which was essentially his backyard, inspiring a lifelong interest in ecology and sustainability. He graduated Harvard with a degree in Sociology, became a Winant volunteer in London., and worked at Sikorsky Aircraft, Superior Electric and eventually formed his own company, Industrial Systems Associates. He was former head of the CT chapter of the Numerical Controls Society. He was an active member of the Hartford Unitarian Meeting House and served on the B&G committee. In his retirement years he was a devoted volunteer docent at the nearby Vintage Radio Museum.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the friends, staff and medical professionals at the Seabury community he had called home for the past 15 years. Ed donated his body to UConn Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held on September 9, 2023, 11am, at the Unitarian Meeting House, Hartford CT. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the Unitarian Society of Hartford (ushartford.org) or the Vintage Radio and Communications Museum (vrcmct.org).

Again I want to remember Eddie Sax, who lived across the street from me on South St. in Jamaica Plain, at the edge of the Arboretum where both our fathers worked. He was always underneath a big blue old convertible from the 20s I should think during the summer months. He would take the engine apart and put it together again. We had a nice friendship and I am glad that his life was good.

I knew Eddie Sax during the late 40s and early 50s when he was at Harvard and a neigbor in Jamaica Plain where my father Ivan Johnston also a botanist lived across the street from the Sax family. Eddie had a blue 20s convertable that he was always taking apart and putting together again. I was some 4 or 5 years younger but we were friendly. I am glad to see he had a happy life. My regards to his family.
