Edward Saxby Obituary

Edward F. Saxby, Sr., age 85 of Misty Moon Manor, Harrison, ME died Wednesday, (April 16, 2003) at his residence. He was born in Worcester, VT, on February 20, 1918 a son of Archie and Madine Gray Saxby. He spent his early life on his grandfathers farm in Vermont. He moved to Connecticut in 1927 and was educated for the first eight years at Topath School in Avon. He attended high school in Simsbury and Hartford, and Cherryfield Academy in Maine. He graduated from Wethersfield H.S. in Connecticut in 1937 and from Connecticut State Teachers College in 1941. He received letters in three sports and played some semi-pro baseball. Ed taught in Rocky Hill and Hartford, Connecticut, and was principal at Naubuc School in Glastonbury. He also taught for 23 years at Avon Old Farms School, a boys prep school, where he was an instructor in Math, Science and Economics. He coached hockey, football, baseball, and was Director of Community Service. Mr. Saxby retired from Avon Old Farms in 1971 and moved to Harrison, where he and his wife ran the Misty Moon Manor, a family resort. He was one of the charter members of the Harrison Lions Club, was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Bridgton where he served several years as Parish Council President, Eucharistic Minister and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Red Sox and Patriots fan. He is predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Theresa Dillon Saxby. The two of them were inseparable. Her final words were, "Ed, Ill hold the door open for you." Surviving are his son, Edward F. Saxby, Jr and his wife, Jill Saxby of Cape Elizabeth; three daughters, Patricia Saxby- Morang and her husband, John Morang of Gorham, ME, Marilyn Webster and her husband Maynard of New Sharon, ME, and Janice Methot and her husband, Claude of Portland, ME. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Shannon Saxby of Cape Elizabeth, Forrest Bell of Gorham, ME and Gwendolyn Bell of Oxnard, CA. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Maine Cancer Foundation, 970 Baxter Blvd, Portland, ME 04103 or to the Lakes Environmental Association, 102 Main Street, Bridgton, ME 04009. Arrangements are under the care of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton.

My sympathies to you and your family upon the loss of your father.

I never met him in person but remember you speaking fondly of him.



It's been many years since we've been in touch. I sincerely hope life has treated you well and will continue to.

I am so sorry to hear of Edward's passing. My Mother is Evelyn Novak, sister of Edward's father Archie. She is living at a healthcare facility near me, and I will pass along this news to her.
