Elizabeth Maritano Obituary

MARITANO, Elizabeth "Betty" (Grammatica) Elizabeth "Betty" (Grammatica) Maritano, 90, of Roosevelt Avenue, Torrington died Monday, (September 3, 2007) at Litchfield Woods. She was the wife of the late Amerigo (Amy) Maritano. Born April 17, 1917, in Torrington, she was the daughter of the late Luigi and Lena (Lorenzello) Grammatica. Upon the death of her husband and our father in 1962, our mother secured a job at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in the Dietary Department. With a strong dedication to her family coupled with a great work ethic, our mother enjoyed a successful employment career until her retirement in 1983. During her many years of employment, our mother never missed a day. As a widow she was forced to be a single mom when the term single mom was not common-place and unknowingly established a great example for others to follow. Our mother was very proud of her affiliation with two local singing groups, The Silver Belles and Beaux and the Amici Italiano. Along with her sister Anna Marinelli, they were two of the founding members of Amici Italiano. Our mother kept herself fit by walking and applying her dietary training to create sensible eating habits. The Maritano family would like to thank Mary Riley and Fran Lovallo for their loyal friendship to our mother. On behalf of our mother, we would also like to thank Len Dube for his compassionate response at the passing of her son and our brother Ray who served in the Air Force. How happy and proud our mother was as her son's life and military service was honored during a memorial service. She is survived by two sons, Amerigo (Amy) Maritano of Torrington, Robert (Bob) Maritano of Vermont; five grandchildren, great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son Raymond. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 17, at 10 a.m. at The LaPorta-Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington. Burial will follow in St. Francis New Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 16, from 4-7 p.m. at The LaPorta-Cook Funeral Home. The family is requesting that memorial contributions be made to the Veteran`s Service Office, 140 Main St., Torrington, CT 06790.
